Australia dismissed South Africa for 272 with only 10 balls remaining to win an entertaining third and final Test and avoid a series whitewash.

Graeme Smith, returning to the crease with a broken finger, fell to Mitchell Johnson to hand the hosts victory.

The tourists started the day needing 314 to pull off an unlikely result but lost Neil McKenzie, Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla in the opening session.

Peter Siddle was man of the match with Smith named man of the series.

Australia’s victory meant that they retained their position at the top of the International Cricket Council’s official Test rankings.

The South Africans had already clinched the three-match series after winning the first two Tests in Perth and Melbourne and began the fifth day on 62 having lost Morne Morkel on Tuesday.

The first session did not go as planned for the tourists with McKenzie falling with the total only moving forward by six runs. Kallis then fell for just four and Hashim Amla went for 59.

AB de Villiers showed some resistance with a solid 56 but was eventually bowled by Siddle, leaving his side on a precarious 193-7 at the tea interval.

Makhaya Ntini held out for over 17 overs, adding a fabulous 50 runs for the ninth wicket, before Dale Steyn was removed lbw by Andrew McDonald for 28.

This set up a dramatic finale as South Africa tried to cling on for the draw with Smith, not having played since retiring hurt with a broken finger and troublesome left elbow in the first innings, deciding to bat.

Smith entered the arena with 7.2 overs left to a standing ovation from the SCG crowd and survived for 17 balls before falling for three to Mitchell.

Man-of-the-match paceman Siddle ended with match figures of 8-113.

The world’s three leading news agencies are not covering the series because of a dispute with Cricket Australia.

Reuters, Agence France-Presse and Associated Press have suspended all coverage of the 2008-09 season.

Their photographers and reporters did not supply material from within the ground. As a result, we cannot use pictures from the current match.

remember…

a beautiful, powerful word full of grace and gratitude.

We are surrounded by inspiring individuals. Those who have the ability to make us appreciate, grow, and aspire to something more than we feel we are capable of. I have enjoyed following Ali Edward’s blog and consider her such a great example. I love to see our little scrapping world follow her and her challenges because they are wonderful and so meaningful. Thank you Ali for sharing your passion for life and creativity with us. Her “One Little Word” challenge of 2009 has been floating around in my head and I decided to take the time to act upon it. I enjoyed the process of filtering through some of my most favorite words…those that seem to have a great impact on me personally, in order to come up with the word I want to focus on this year. “Remember” is the word I have chosen and for so many reasons which I will enjoy and act upon throughout the year.

Today “Remember” goes hand in hand with gratitude and joy. I have been taught that we can see the hand of the Lord in our life each day if we will take the time to recognize simple miracles…blessings…and to remember what has been done for us. I can’t help but be happy when I remember special experiences each day where I have seen my Heavenly Father’s love for me. Sometimes it is found in the smile or tears of my little girl. Sometimes in the kind act or thoughtful words of someone else. Sometimes in the laughter I share with my husband. I love to remember…it’s a special word to me.

Lots going on here this morning while me little one is at school. I’ll share more details a bit later, but for now how about a card or two?

I found me a darling butterfly punch from Martha Stewart…and I can’t stop using it…so forgive me for the flock of butterflies you may see for a little while :)

i used melissa frances paper, turn up one’s toes cuts, rubons, and a cardstock sticker on this along with the butterfly punch from martha stewart, and a particle of glitter.

I have been having a lot of fun playing with brighter colors lately, and so here is a little something along those lines.

i used the new papertrey ink stamp assemble called forest friends and forest friends sentiments on this along with pure poppy ink, aqua mist grosgrain, and my favorite stamper’s select unsullied papertrey cardstock. also used here is a bit of sei poppy paper, and jenni bowlin argosy dots records, a maya road chipboard bookplate covered in draw and glitter, some k&co. paper ribbon, a martha stewart butterfly, and my provo trickery forest branches embossing folder.

It seems my time is up….a few little friends heading over to play today :)Happy Tuesday.

Jeff Vrabel: I’ll stop doing stupid things in the coming year

Listen, I know you’re tired of year-end retrospectives. If you’re anything like me — which, unless you’re eating Apple Jacks right now with a fork, you’re probably not — you’ve been slugged in dull fashion with dozens of them already.I know these pieces are routine and obvious and obligatory and they assume most people have forgotten the preceding months have been pretty swell for Barack Obama and Michael Phelps. And I know the ability to successfully purchase a URL is now the sole prerequisite to publishing lists of The Best Everything of the Past Year, a pursuit occasionally indulged in by people who like putting things in lists that do not go in lists. But trust me when I say there’s a very good reason: We totally need to sell commemorative editions. If there’s any way you could buy like 12 of these papers right now, I would so be your friend for life.Besides, it’s not as if we’re falling over ourselves to write these pieces either; it’s actually totally out of our hands. You may not be aware that we newspaper writers are actually required by federal law to furnish, at the end of each calendar year, some form of year-end nostalgic retrospective article or column. That idea was first conceived by President Calvin Coolidge, our most alliterative president and also the first person to go on record with a Worst Album Covers of the Year list (of course, he did that in 1923, so it’s basically just a series of shots at Glenn Miller and Guy Lombardo, both of whom were pretty gnarly dudes). Historians note this is the only important thing Coolidge ever did, though he’s also occasionally credited with penning the nation’s first list of Most Shocking Celebrity Breakups. So you can see how the year-end thing is out of our hands. And I need to fulfill my Coolidge-ian requirements with download drama movie something, but my options are limited.I can’t do a list of movies, because thanks to the cinematic interests of my most frequent movie companion, who is 4 and failed to share one bit of my enthusiasm for “The Dark Knight” (“Why does this movie have 12 endings, Daddy”?).So here’s what I’ve come up with: In 2009, I think we should all resolve to be not quite so dumb.I don’t mean dumb as in walking-directly-into-a-closed-sliding-glass-door dumb, because frankly, I have made that resolution each New Year’s for the past 33 years, and I don’t think it’s ever coming true. So I am this year tabling my annual pledge to not do things such as pour water into a coffee maker that is pretty clearly already on, resulting in the delightful sight of slightly brown water streaming out of the coffee maker while I stand there, watching water pour out of the coffee maker, while continuing to pour water into the coffee maker, while staring at the entire tragic escapade thinking, “Jeez, someone should really fix this coffee maker.”I mean dumb as in basic, ground-level common sense sort of ideas, such as, for instance, not running a giant $50 billion cash-thieving scheme out of my office download action movie. I’m gonna try to stop doing that. I’m also gonna try to stop telling Katie Couric I am a wizardress who can read 3,500 newspapers a day.I’m thinking that if I don’t have quite enough money for a plasma screen TV whose warming glow I can see in the sky from work, I might not buy it right then. I think, since I’m not actually a plumber, I’m gonna ask people to stop calling me Jeff the Plumber. I’m done trying to sell the Illinois Senate seat, because you can’t imagine how much of a pain that has been. And I am definitely, 100 percent, going to start eating Apple Jacks with a spoon. Jeff Vrabel is a freelance writer.
yes, francisco rodriguez broke the single season saves transactions last year. yes, he’s now pitching in new york. and yes, he left a pretty big tight spot in the endorse of the angels bullpen.but angels fans shouldn’t worry. with the signing of brian fuentes, not only sire the angels found a suitable replacement for k-rod — they flat out got a better player.while rodriguez did set a new platter confidentially for saves in a season, you could almost certainly demonstrate that 2008 wasn’t his most beneficent — or upright his alternate overwhelm — season in his career. his strikeouts were down from years past. he allowed a few more guys on base than years past, and 1-2-3 innings were less common. he blew seven saves. his make a pig conditions seemed as nasty as it was in years days of yore. his record setting saves total likely could be experiencing been duplicated by any of the game’s first closers — the angels played such a amusing amount of close games that any pitcher would have gotten more than enough chances to disintegrate the record.he’s stationary one of the better closers in the league, but because of the money he was demanding from the angels, the front branch had good percipience to reconnoitre other options. fuentes was seemingly their #1 target from the start of the offseason, and on the side of good reason. the three-time all-name has posted merest good career numbers despite playing most of his games in denver, and rebounded nicely from losing his closer’s role in 2007 to post a solid season.fuentes originally astray his closer’s difficulty because he was missing less and less bats, seeing his strikeout aggregate drop to just 56 in 61 innings. in 2008, he rebounded to post 82 strikeouts in 62 innings — that’s five more punchouts than rodriguez posted while appearing in nine less games. fuentes also has shown a movement to walk less batters the past hardly seasons. from 2006 to 2008, fuentes has posted walk totals of 26, 23, and 22. in that timeframe, k-contumacious had walk totals of 28, 34, and 34. rodriguez has historically put up wagerer times numbers than fuentes, but fuentes’ total is likely inflated directly to playing in an farthest hitter’s garden, and eras instead of relievers tend to be misleading due to small cross-section sizes, anyway. what’s more important to relievers — especially those closing unacceptable games — is keeping guys off the bases. in that regard, fuentes was actually better than rodriguez in 2008. opponents put up a line of .216/.314/.316 against k-dowel, which is by no means bad. against fuentes, putting, opponents hit just .205/.277/.293. the 37-point difference in obp is largely due to fuentes allowing less walks and less hits, ultimately foremost in more 1-2-3 innings and less heart attacks on the side of the fans.fuentes signed with los angeles for a total of $17.5 million for 2 years, making him a huge bargain compared to the $37 million over 3 years that rodriguez got from the mets. while the mets went with the ready-mixed gratification of signing rodriguez in early december, the angels smartly played the waiting game with fuentes and watched his asking assess exclude from a possible 3 year deal advantage $30 million to a 2 year commitment for less than $10 million a year. not only did the angels recover themselves a yoke million dollars a year, but they signed a pitcher that will — at worst — duplicate rodriguez’s gig in 2009.

Chimichurri

Having been a vegetarian at least for parts of my young (?) existence (despite growing up in a carnivorous country, meat was rarely served in my family, at least by Austrian standards, and I turned wholly vegetarian after a bad bout of food poisoning in Mexico, only reluctantly giving it up when I fell pregnant with my eldest), I still marvel at the 360-degree turns one can make… in my late teens and early tweens, I easily gagged at the sight of meat whereas lately, the thought of having a big juicy steak is one that can keep me going for an entire week if I know that a visit to the Borough Market is due and I might be lucky and snatch some fillet at the stall of the lovely people who sell their Devon-reared wild beef.

There is no dish that has been more of a constant in our married life than fillet steak and no other dish has gone through as many incarnations as this. In the 90s, we were trying to perfect a cream sauce, simply with green pepper, or a red wine or portwine reduction (with some disastrous and expensive experiments in the area), early in this decade we leaned more towards thick, herby sauces in the style of a pesto (coriander and rocket being a firm favourite) or a guacamole-inspired avocado number. It was only lately that we discovered a new addiction that grabbed our attention in an entirely different context and at the moment, we can’t have steak without it. Chimichurri. I don’t even remember how an innocent tupperware of the stuff ended up in my kitchen - it must have been my friend Sonia, spaniard married to a Chilean, who brought it along… I really can’t remember the occasion. But like a BoneyM song (though WAY more pleasant) that just sticks in your head and you can’t help but hum along to it all day long, it must have been racing around my dear little brain for weeks until I finally decided to read up on it and have a go myself.

An hour later, we’re having dinner and enjoy a whole new taste-experience packed with fresh coriander, garlic and chilli (a combination I could not resist, no matter how hard I tried) and it instantly wins a firm place in our repertoire: not just with steak, it also cuts through oily fish like a treat, we’ve had left-overs of it for an aperitif (dunk into it with some fluffy bread) and it livens up any plate of our weekly vegetables-left-over-from-our-organic-box medley… so quick to make and so satisfying, this is a sauce we’ll definitely carry over into the coming year, if not the next decade!

Happy New Year, everyone, to a joy-filled 2009 and some great culinary highlights!

Chimichurri(serves 4 as a steak accompaniment)

1 bunch (ca. 60 g) fresh coriander or parsley*1 medium red onion2 cloves garlic

60 ml olive oil40 ml red wine vinegar30 ml water? red chilli (seeded, de-veined and finely diced)1 tbsp Hungarian paprika (i.e. sundried, but unsmoked)1 tbsp course sea salt1 tsp ground pepper

The alamo

Chop the coriander, red onion and garlic finely in a food processor. Combine with the rest of the ingredients and leave to infuse in a cool place for at least half an hour.

Serve with grilled meat or fish, roast chicken or whatever takes your fancy, really.

* I definitely prefer the cilantro/coriander version, but you should really experiment and find your own, favourite herb.

this has been a maddening season to be a philadelphia eagles fan. yet, here they are, playoff bound, thanks to an epic shellacking of one of the more despicable dallas cowboys teams in recent history.

And, yes, that video is of Eagles owner Jeff Lurie clocking his wife, Christina, right between the thousand-dollar specs after the Eagles scored their 45th touchdown of the afternoon. (After the 46th touchdown, he kneed her in the stomach.)

Universal studios orlando

There are plenty of reasons why the Eagles shouldn’t be in the playoffs, but thanks to the futility of the Buccaneers, Bears, and, yes, ‘Dem Cowboys, the Birds travel to Minneapolis next week to face the Vikings in what will heretofore be called the Battle of Big Daddy Balls.

how great is it that tony romo once again ends another season with his hands covering his face in debase? weeping romo pose should become a yoga determine. and already, the cowboys are looking for scapegoats for this latest disaster and surprisingly, they’re not pointing fingers at blather on phillips. and judgement what? neither is jerry jones, who stated in the post-game press conference that the son of bum is safe.

Anyway…who’s knobbed-up for a two-day work week! We’ll be short on posting the next few days, but do everything possible to keep you busy while you clean out your desk and make New Year’s plans.

Thank you for your continued support of Deadspin and Andy Reid’s scary playoff beard.

Amazon posted its biggest holiday season sales in history, the company reported Friday. According to data it compiled from witnessed sales, over 6.3 million items were ordered on December 15, its “peak” day, representing 72.9 items ordered per second. It shipped 5.6 million units that day, as well. Amazon shipped products to more than 210 countries and more than 99 percent of orders were sent in time to meet holiday deadlines worldwide.
Ringful, a start-up that focuses on connecting the Web to mobile phones, launched a new Facebook app Friday called Voicetag, which lets users send voice-mail messages from their mobile phone to friends or groups in Facebook. To send a message, Voicetag requires the user to choose a friend and input his or her mobile phone number. Once complete, Voicetag calls the user and records their voice message. The recipient then receives a notification from Ringful, which includes a link to play the message. Voicetag is free and available now in Facebook’s App archive.
