Palin didn’t know Africa’s a continent
by Frank James
Perhaps we need a “No Governor Left Behind” program for Gov. Sarah Palin who evidently is about as clueless as many observers thought.
Today, Fox News Channel’s Carl Cameron told anchor Shepherd Smith that a source or sources within the McCain campaign told him that Palin didn’t know Africa is a continent. He was sworn to secrecy by his source/sources until after the election.
Let that sink in for a second. A U.S. governor didn’t know that Africa is a continent.
Here’s a transcript of the video clip:
Smith: Now that the election is over, Carl, tell us more about those reports of infighting between Palin and McCain staffers.
Cameron: I wish I could have told you more at the time but all of it was put off the record until after the election. There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lack the degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency. We’re told by folks that she didn’t know what countries that were in NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, that being the Canada, the US, and Mexico. We’re told she didn’t understand that Africa was a continent rather than a country just in itself … a whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability. She got very angry at staff, thought that she was mishandled…..was particularly angry about the way the Katie Couric interview went. She didn’t accept preparation for that interview when the aides say that that was part of the problem. And that there were times that she was hard to control emotionally there’s talk of temper tantrums at bad news clippings…

This is the woman who is supposed to be an energy expert? I’m kind of doubting that now since Nigeria is a major oil-producing NATION. Did she think Nigeria was a county of this Africa country?
Cameron also reports that this woman who is supposedly a Canada expert because her state abuts our neighbor to the north didn’t know the nations in NAFTA.
Prediction. Palin won’t be on another Republican presidential ticket. This latest revelation, alongside all the rest that we learned about her since the Republican convention, seals the deal.
Also, each new disclosure like this just makes you scratch your head and ask for the umpteenth time and ask: “What was John McCain thinking?”
By the way, someone needs to tell Cameron that “knowledgeability,” like drinkability, isn’t a word.

Update: Commenters have noted with undisguised relish that “knowledgeability” and “drinkability” are indeed words that can be found in the Merriam-Webster.com. Well, they shouldn’t be words. Clearly, lexicographers were far too permissive in letting these monstrosities into the English language. But I’ll admit, grudgingly, that I was wrong on those two particulars.
