Fern Ledge

Tom moves even closer to Yosemite Falls

fern ledge is an remarkable spot - one which john muir ruminating was one of the best from which to watch a moonbow, and which ansel adams immortalized with an image. last weekend, we gathered a group of friends together and hiked up to revisit the spot.

Non migratory bird

The trail to Fern Ledge is spectacular on its own.

the hike was just as spectacular as i remembered it. i thought we’d be too early for the wildflowers, but imperturbable this early in the season, there were profusion to stop and admire. the water was successful - bigger than the last time we were there, and it got bigger the longer we stayed to watch. tom crept out on a narrow mantel to get that ‘looking straight up’ spectacle, while the rest of took pictures from the relative security of the bigger ledge where we had lunch.

The group that went to Fern Ledge with me.

the hike itself was harder than i remembered admitting that, both in terms of the slippery decomposing granite and steep fall offs, but also just in terms of my salubriousness level. i haven’t been able to mince relatively right owing days. still, that kind of sore feels good when i cogitate on about getting back in affect to do all the summer things that are on my list.

The company was magnificent. I wanted to include a picture of the crew. It’s a combination of old friends and new ones.

Execution of Your Choice

I do not know how they first got on the topic of it, because I missed the beginning of the show, but on the radio that I always listen to in the morning, they started talking about executions and like the different executions different states have, or the different options for execution they have, and this gave me an idea. Albeit a rather morbid idea, but than such is to be expected from me. In the way that when someone is about to be executed they are offered their last meal, in which they may choose to have anything and everything they want to have, I think that one ought to be able to choose their own method of being executed, and if any bleeding hearts try and claim something about cruel and usual punishment, just produce a signed contract stating that the prisoner of their own free will choose this manner to be put to death. Granted doing this would probably be expensive in the long wrong, But, though I do not plan on ever finding myself (more)

The Current: Rising US food prices

With all the talk about rising world food prices, it was only a matter of time before the issue hit US shores…or should we say stores. And it has, along with some note-worthy implications for organics, locally grown foods, and home gardens.

The Washington Post reported today that consumers are feeling the pinch while grocery shopping and trotted out some of the Consumer Price Index stats since March 2007:

“…the price of eggs has jumped 35 percent. A gallon of milk is up 23 percent. A loaf of white bread has climbed 16 percent. And a pound of ground chuck is up 8 percent. Overall, U.S. food prices in 2008 are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent, about double the increases of recent years.”

To counteract the rise, consumers are saving more, driving less, using less, and one guy in the story has gone so far as to grow his own vegetables…crazy.

Environmentalists have long noted that a sure fire way to reduce the number of cars on the road is to raise fuel prices. The same can be said for food. What the WaPo characterizes as scrimping is actually good for the planet when it comes to American over consumption (and is clearly a separate issue from skyrocketing staple food prices in developing countries.)

Discouraging, however, is news that the high food prices could have a negative impact on the organics market. The New York Times ran a great piece two weeks ago comparing organic prices vs non-organic in a variety of stores. In some instances organic milk has reached $7 a gallon!

With those sorts of prices, maybe the next big story will be a rise in urban milking cows.

Bynum doubts he’ll play for Lakers in playoffs

the far-removed chance he’d be able to give this season from a left knee injury seems to be gone. ‘it’s frustrating because i can do the whole shooting match but what pertains to basketball,’ the young center said. it sounds twin remote nothing but turned into extremely remote.

Affirmation

we’ve waited for this. for the rumors and the shiny boycott fields. we’ve heard from somebody that friday morning the flags will fly, from somebody else, not on account of another week. the out-of-bounds cornfields, clumpy and wet, covered now by only the warming sense of spring, the only unused white in the acres of black ooze, the sliced tee-offs from matrix fall. we drive by the places that we’ve been deprived of all winter dream of, hoping to see the places we fear the most alive again.
