What: A government-created virus all but wipes out America. Holed up in a fortress of solitude, Will Smith’s character, military scientist Robert Neville, struggles to find a cure using immunities in his own blood. Also, there are zombies. 9/10

When: The not-too-distant future. 9/10

Where: New York. This might seem more believable in D.C. or in Atlanta at the CDC headquarters. 6/10

Why: Because some people liked the book and the 2 other movies made about the book. 7/10

How: Will Smith has finally hit his acting stride (his sappy performances of recent years haven’t done much for me). He plays Neville with subtlety: you believe this guy is on the brink of losing his mind. You kind of want him to lose his mind. It’s scary because you know that if you were in the same situation no one to talk to but your dog for five years you’d totally lose your mind First Things. 9/10

Etc: Bonus points for all the psychological drama. It kept the zombies from being the main focus. (Also, I’m conflicted about the zombies not really being zombies. I like the realism, but I’m almost over this trend. Yeah, yeah disease is bad, but why can’t zombies just be zombies?) Bonus points for a pseudo-happy ending. Society will live on, but at what price? 9/10
