Were you hit by Poetry in Motion?’

Newburyport was struck this week by a band of rebel book lovers on a mission to deliver poetry to unsuspecting readers. The gang of four women, otherwise known as the publicity committee for the Newburyport Literary Festival, rolled through town in a red Mini Cooper Wednesday, placing 20 books of poetry at various locations, including the boardwalk, the commuter rail and even in the men’s locker room at The Fitness Factory.

Bible verses for Mother‘s Day includes a collection of inspirational Bible Scriptures for women chosen to bless a loving mother or godly wife.

All of the books used in the “Poetry in Motion” campaign were written by poets who’ll be participating in this weekend’s festival, which runs through Sunday. Poetry is the central focus of this year’s festival.

Skye Wentworth, committee chairwoman and book publicist, said the campaign was inspired by the international phenomenon BookCrossing.com, which invites readers to spread literacy by leaving books in public places for strangers. Each book includes a note indicating that it is meant to be picked up, read and passed along. Those who find a BookCrossing book are asked to post a message to the site, therefore tracking the book’s journey.

The NLF publicity committee — made up of Jennifer Karin, Gillian Swart, Melanie Wold and Wentworth — inserted a similar note inside each of the poetry books, asking finders to post a message to the festival’s official Web site, www.newburyportliteraryfestival.org. The note also encouraged finders to attend the festival.

“As a publicist, I’ve seen great things come of this campaign,” said Wentworth. “The books can end up anywhere.”

While some lucky Port residents were rewarded with poetry by Rhina P. Espaillat, X.J. Kennedy and Lewis Turco, the committee was rewarded with a good time.

Wold, who donated the use of her car, said the women first envisioned racing around in the Mini Cooper and tossing books from the window, but then thought better of it. And Wentworth jokingly referred to the group as “Ocean’s Four.”

“This poetry book campaign will be our swan song for the Newburyport Literary Festival — more fun than writing the press releases!” Wentworth said.

The publicity committee began a similar program called “Bag a Book” this month at the Bresnahan School, where students were given books written by some of the children’s authors who’ll be participating in the festival, and were asked to read them, post a message about their favorite characters, and then pass along the book.
