Debate Night Open Thread!
Nobody wants to bother with the infamous, deplorable Keith Olbermann on a Big Night like this. So instead of a recappers’ thread, here’s a debate night open thread. Festivities begin at 9:00 pm Eastern, but of course there will be contributions beamed in from OlbyPlanet. In fact, two separate Hours of Spin, one before and one after the debate.
For the main event, you’ll have the Wolf pack on CNN, Brit and the gang on Fixed News [Ding!], and MSNBC? Well, since MSLSD has a new policy against using its partisan web-spinners as political anchors, David Gregory (now that’s really a change!) will do the honors for them. Yes, only real reporters anchor political events on A-Mess-NBC. Except when they let a failed Err America comedian anchor them, that is. Good ol’ Madcow. She’s no journalist, but she does play one on tv.
So here’s your open thread for tonight’s fun and games. If you do happen to watch MSDNC, feel free to post any Oralmann howlers/whoppers/lies you catch. Maybe you’ll catch him popping a vein over MSNBC caving in to pressure from the eeevil Bill O’Reilly. Oh wait, Bathtub Boy never criticizes his corporate masters (that’s why his manhood quotient is always in negative terrority). So much for that.
Tonight, we won’t blame you if you pass up Keith “Man on Fan” Olbermann in favor of real journalism, fair and balanced. Whatever channel you choose, this thread is your water cooler for The Big Night. Comments are open!

Burned by Bush, Skittish Nobel Laureates Rally Behind Obama
A list of 61 Nobel Laureates issued an open letter to their fellow Americans Thursday urging them to vote for Barack Obama.
Asked about the basis of their support, a small sub-group of those scientists’ basic answer was: Because he’s a safe bet, and because he would make science education and research funding a priority .
A trio of Nobel Laureates reached out to the media together with the Obama campaign Thursday to explain their support. They sounded haunted by the past eight years of the Bush Administration’s unflagging record of fudging scientific evidence to suit political aims, and by its powerfully symbolic exile of its science advisers from the White House.
“We join this effort because we strongly believe that US science policy has been disastrous during the past several years, and that we need a new and visionary leadership to ensure America’s dominant position in the sciences, and to maintain our nation’s competitiveness in the world.” said Bob Horvitz, an MIT biologist who won a Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2002.
The three scientists who held a conference call with reporters Thursday said that they couldn’t trust John McCain’s positions regarding science policy because of political pressure from religious conservatives. They were particularly concerned about McCain’s position on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
McCain says he supports it, but his support isn’t spelled out clearly enough to the scientists’ liking.
McCain has a mixed record on the subject. He’s previously opposed the funding of embryonic stem levitra de cell research, but changed his position in 2001 when he said he was “educated” about the subject. He’s also joined with Kansas senator Sam Brownback to sponsor related legislation that scientists charge is based on a deliberate misinterpretation of scientific reality.
“While I think that Senator McCain has in the past … had some reasonably progressive views, he’s now in the difficult position of reconciling his views with that of the Republican platform,” said Peter Agre, who won a Nobel Prize for his work in chemistry in 2003.
Harold Varmus, who is an Obama campaign science advisor, and who won a Nobel prize in 1989 for his work in medicine, said that there’s general confusion in the scientific community over McCain’s position.

A community waits, hopes
From NBC’s Domenico MontanaroOXFORD, Miss. — The atmosphere on the Ole Miss campus is one of enthusiasm — and a bit of anxiety — for a debate a state has hoped and planned for for a year and a half, since the school applied to have it.
Republican Gov. Haley Barbour today called for the debate to go on. The state newspaper was filled with editorials and op-eds urging McCain to show up.
The Republican nominee may have thrown a wrench viagra bestellen into the plans, but in the debate hall here, workers are drilling the final screws into the debate set; lights are being checked; podiums are being measured; the last of the set’s panels are being put up and wires being weaved. Outside, security checkpoints are in place, network TV camera stands are built and set. (And never mind those hotel reservations and flight plans.)
“The debate will go on,” University of Mississippi Vice Chancellor Gloria Kellum told NBC’s local affiliate, adding, “We’ve spent two years working on this.”

LSU fans who remember the limp-wristed second quarter toss against Auburn that led to the easiest interception return for a touchdown of the 2008 season will recognize the hand-eye coordination in the above photo of Lee engaging in extracurricular collegiate activities. Last year Lee was a redshirt freshman behind Mike Flynn and the batshit crazy Ryan Perrilloux, now he’s a beer pong all-star treating sorority houses as a 24-hour buffet.

WASHINGTON - The FBI is investigating four major U.S. financial institutions whose collapse helped trigger a $700 billion bailout plan by the Bush administration, The Associated Press has learned.
Two law enforcement officials said Tuesday the FBI is looking at potential fraud by mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and insurer American International Group Inc. Additionally, a senior law enforcement official said Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. also is under investigation.
The inquiries will focus on the financial institutions and the individuals that ran them, the senior law enforcement official said.
The law enforcement officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigations are ongoing and are in the very early stages.
Officials said the new inquiries bring to 26 the number of corporate lenders under investigation over the past year.
Spokesmen for AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac did not immediately return calls for comment Tuesday evening. A Lehman spokesman did not have an immediate comment.
Just last week, FBI Director Robert Mueller put the number of large financial firms under investigation at 24. He did not name any of the companies under investigation but said the FBI also was looking at whether any of them have misrepresented their assets.

Militants have attacked another oil facility in Nigeria’s Delta region, after “declaring war” at the weekend.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) said it had destroyed Shell’s Orubiri flow-station.
“Militants in eight speed boats attacked Orubiri with bombs, dynamite and hand grenades,” said military spokesman Lt Col Sagir Musa.
This is the fourth attack this week. Nigeria’s oil production has been cut by 20% due to the unrest.
Col Musa told Reuters news agency that no soldiers had been killed in the attack.
Militants also claimed to have blown up a major oil pipeline at Rumuekpe in Rivers State, but the military could not confirm the attack.
Hostages not free
The BBC’s Andrew Walker in Nigeria says the recent fighting has been the heaviest in two years between militants and security forces.
Mend says it has killed at least 29 people, mostly soldiers, although this has been denied by the military.
Two other Shell facilities have been attacked, while a raid on one owned by Chevron was fought off on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the military said two South African hostages captured on the weekend had been released, but this has been denied by Mend.
The South Africans were among 27, including two Britons, seized from an oil services ship on Saturday.

“For the avoidance of doubt Mend wishes to state we still have custody of the two South African Hostages,” an e-mail to journalists said.
The group also said the hostages would be used as a “human shield” during their handover, which Mend said would happen soon.

Mend said it was “declaring war” in response to attacks by the military, which it said had left seven of its fighters dead on Saturday.
Some 200 foreign oil workers have been taken hostage in recent years.
Almost all have been freed, normally in return for a ransom, although this is always officially denied.
The militants claim to be fighting for the rights of inhabitants of the oil-producing Niger Delta, who mostly live in poverty.
But many say they are criminal gangs out to extort money from oil companies.

Officials in an Israeli city have come up with an innovative way of tracking dog owners who allow their pets to foul the streets - DNA analysis.
Authorities in Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv, are setting up a special DNA database of local dogs.
They will use the data to match dogs’ droppings to owners - and punish those who achat cialis do not clean up after their pets.
While those who keep the streets clear will be rewarded, owners who fail to scoop the poop could face fines.
“My goal is to get the residents involved and tell them that together, we can make our environment clean,” Tika Bar-On, the city’s chief veterinarian, told Reuters news agency.
