Nothing trivial about Parkway Baseball Club’s fundraiser

What is the name of the ball field at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York?
That was a question put to dozens of parents whose children play in the Parkway Baseball Club Saturday night, as the group held a trivia night at the Sprinkler Fitters Union Hall in West Roxbury to raise money for its upcoming seasons.
But many parents who were stumped by the question will soon become more familiar with the answer. One of the main expenses the club was raising money for is its annual trip out to Cooperstown to play in a tournament in the Hall of Fame city.
Every year since 2004, the year Dennis O’Connor started the club they have been sending their team of 12 year-olds to the tournament in Cooperstown, which happens towards the end of every August.
“it’s a fun way to wind-up negligible league,” said o’connor.
O’Connor said that the children play a lot of baseball while in Cooperstown — seven games between Monday and Wednesday — but there’s also a lot of time for fun. The kids on the team get baseball cards made of themselves, a DVD of their time at the tournament and cookouts at night.
The hall was packed with close to 50 enthusiastic parents. The rock music playing between questions set the event apart from the usual fundraiser atmosphere. O’Connor said that without nights like this one and engaged parents, it wouldn’t be possible to run the teams each year.
The club runs four teams for boys, age 8 through 12, and the Cooperstown tournament is part of a busy summer of baseball for the boys on the teams. Most summers, they play around 24 games.
“It’s a lot of baseball,” said O’Connor. “The more you play, the better you get. It betters the children.”
But for O’Connor, it isn’t just about the kids on his teams now. He wants to build the Parkway into a more vibrant baseball community.
The area has gotten some recent recognition nationally after current Red Sox pitcher Manny Delcarmen was drafted out of West Roxbury High School, but it can be overlooked.
O’Connor thinks that the area’s reputation can be boosted. “It makes their careers in Little League better and the Parkway a stronger baseball community,” he said.
And if you were still wondering about the name of the field in Cooperstown, it’s Doubleday Field. Give yourself seven points for a correct answer.
