Campbell Chooses Michigan; Debose Chooses Florida

526511_medium

LSU got a little bad news on the recruiting trail this weekend, as lineman William Campbell of Detroit ultimately chose Michigan after saying earlier in the week he had eliminated Michigan from consideration, and Florida receiver Andre Debose, who I had previously told you was widely believed to be coming to LSU, chose to be a Florida Gator.

It would have been nice to get either one of those guys, but Campbell would have been just a bonus. A week ago, no one thought there was any chance he was coming to LSU. Then, the noise that he might got louder for a while. Then, he decided not to come to LSU. It would have been a great get, but it’s hardly a bad loss.

Losing Debose hurts, though my understanding is that the coaches aren’t ready to give up on him. Andre Debose is a guy with a high upside, but he’s also a guy who I think is going to be a contributor from day one for whatever team he goes to. That’s a pretty rare find. Most kids need a little seasoning before they’re ready to contribute. Debose’s skill set (great quickness and speed) along with his good hands and his “slot receiver” build seem to indicate, to me at least, that this is a kid who’s going to be dangerous from the start.

Everyone says “Harvin” about Debose, but I really see him more as a Tyrone Prothro. The difference is that Prothro was a pure receiver, where Harvin in a hybrid receiver and running back. Harvin’s an athlete playing on offense, but Debose looks to me like a receiver, which suggests a very high professional upside, but maybe I’m not the one to judge.

Prince william county schools

Ultimately, I think Debose just chose to stay close to home. I think the take-home lesson is that we should not count on an out-of-state guy until he publicly announces he’s coming here.

Still, despite the disappointment of not getting Debose, we have to look at All-Star weekend as an overall success. We got a commitment from a five-star safety in Craig Loston, and then he went out and made a couple of highly athletic plays in the game (including getting a 15-yard-penalty for late hit out of bounds on his cousin and future teammate Russell Shepard). Josh Downs looked incredible playing defensive tackle for the Black team in the UA game. Chris Faulk looked good playing guard for the West team in the Army All-America Bowl. Rueben Randle (who I believe will ultimately sign with LSU) was the most productive receiver in the US Army game, despite playing hurt. Chris Davenport had a slow game at defensive tackle, but reportedly looked good in the Army practices.

And then there’s Russell Shepard, who of course we’re all keeping an eye on. He played quarterback for the Black team at the UA game. He had a 92-yard pass play (to Andre Debose), had a couple of electrifying runs including a touchdown run, but also made some errors including committing a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.

The clear impression on Shepard for me is that he has a lot of ability, but even if he has progressed as a passer in the last year, he still has a ways to go. He can throw the ball just fine. He had more than one solid, accurate pass in the game. He has a good release and appears to have decent mechanics. He just needs a LOT of polish in his decision-making. His fumble came because he held the ball too long before either getting rid of it or taking off and running. One or two other times, he took off running too soon. These are the sorts of things that can be corrected with time and practice, but I emphasize that in no way is Russell Shepard ready RIGHT NOW to be a starting quarterback for LSU. I think he’s ready to run a specialized package of plays (including passes), but handing him the reins of the offense would be a bad idea at this point.

Some people think he will end up moving from the quarterback position to receiver. He may one day do that, but he shows enough promise as a quarterback that that is not necessary right now. Leave him at quarterback and run a specialized playbook for him until he develops. If he hasn’t made progress as a quarterback in a year or so, move him permanently to receiver.

Sometimes people don’t realize how much these kids, even the best of them, still have to learn to master the college game. It is not at all easy to play the quarterback position in college. The defenses are more complex and more athletic than anything these kids saw in high school. The reads are harder. The pressure is greater. The playbook is bigger. And last but not least, these kids are no longer the best athletes on the field (most of them). It’s not easy to step …

over his 14 years with the broncos, mike shanahan gradually became the most powerful man in the organization. he forced out general managers, constantly reshuffled his coaching workforce and held control over every personnel decision, something that surely contributed to his firing on tuesday. as a result, owner credit bowlen is now pitching a more diffuse power structure in which neither the coach nor the g.m., whoever they turn out to be, has more power than the other. the new teacher will be hired in advance the new g.m. and both men will report directly to bowlen. that seems like a situation destined over the extent of problems. there will be disagreements in the course of any working relationship. if they turn someone on serious enough, bowlen will be stilted to choose to keep one or the other, which disposition make whoever stays the de facto power figure anyway. it would make a lot more sense to install the g.m., even if you simply promote advised v.p. of football operations and player personnel jim goodman, and then deceive him help with the coaching search to present a unified organizational blueprint. it’s not surprising that bowlen is approaching this in a different deportment than many of his peers. although he’s owned the get since 1984, this is sole the third time bowlen has had to hire a head crammer. dan reeves was already there when he bought the join forces, and wade phillips was briefly the coach anterior to shanahan rose to the position.

as i gear up for a bumper-to-bumper 2-hour or so ride to my family’s house quest of christmas, i’m reminded of how instead of sitting in break See trade, i should be at the movies seeing the eleventh matchless trek movie right about randomly. imagine, christmas day was original release go steady with scheduled for paramount’s dignitary trek (then dubbed star trek xi) from director jj abrams, which was recently moved to may 8, 2009 as the studio now views the highly anticipated film as a summer tentpole. that’s real great and all, but i had been planning for months to see the big on christmas — actually at the christmas eve midnight showing to be exact. i had already treated all familial quadrants for this event. as soon as i said that the new star trek movie was to be released on christmas day, nearly everyone knew what i was prosperous to say next anyway, since my lose one’s heart to of trek is quite well know. so, christmas eve midnight showing (in lieu of church, sorry grandma), then if the movie was totally awesome, another showing with the nieces and nephews some time on christmas day. it wasn’t easy, but i got everybody to except my decision …

Fur for the troops

llama1.jpg

The daily, 50-degree temperature swings during winter in the Iraqi desert are brutal on troops, and nuns and monks at the Holy Rosary Abbey are donating labor and resources to knit llama wool helmet liners for the soldiers’ comfort.

Their effort is part of Operation Helmet Liner - a nationwide drive to knit hypoallergenic liners from soft wool and donate them to soldiers serving in harsh climates. Members of the Galesburg group, which raises the llamas and harvests the fleece, say it is a natural step for them.

“Our order was founded on the premise of the complete life. Our lives our well balanced, and we have a daily schedule of prayer, work, study, meals, recreation and socialization,” leader Abbot Ryan St. Anne said.

Raising llamas is part of the work portion, and it generates income for the abbey’s expenses. Llama wool is a near perfect fleece for helmet liners that wicks moisture, captures heat and is lightweight.

“It is a very large network of knitters. It’s not just llama people, but we are providing llama wool to those who will agree to knit and donate liners. There is a specified pattern that must be used to satisfy military safety requirements, and it is available online,” St. Anne said. “It doesn’t have to be made with llama wool, but it has to be 100 percent soft wool.

“We pray for our country and our soldiers every day. None of them chose to go there. They were sent to defend us. The helmet liners project is a way to serve them.”

Linda Swinford, who began and oversees Operation Helmet Liner, said the organization has shipped “78,000 pieces, all at no charge to our armed forces. I have no idea how many hundreds of seamstresses, crocheters and knitters all across the U.S. have been involved since we began.

“In addition, groups have formed throughout the country adopting our patterns and supporting our armed forces on their own, which is wonderful,” she said.

The monks got into llama farming as an investment, according to St. Anne. The finished, undyed wool sells for $8 to $15 an ounce. Organic farmers seek llama manure for fertilizer, and it sells for about $25 per bag.

“Llama beans, as we call it, have no gases or ammonia. It is a natural fertilizer that doesn’t have a bad odor,” St. Anne said. “We have always been a divine providence community. We never sold anything and lived off of the generosity of benefactors, but they have been hit hard. Raising miniature llamas was a way we could become self-supportive in an extremely friendly environment and not be offensive to anyone.”

Galesburg city officials say the abbey and the llama farm on the edge of town operate within all city codes.

The abbey has 12 llamas, and the first fleece will be harvested in the spring. The nuns and monks at the abbey are learning to spin the fleece into yarn and there are plans to buy a weaving loom next year.

Vida tea

Rather than a large barn, the abbey elected to construct smaller buildings and several paddocks to provide shelter and pasture for the animals. They put up a privacy fence to be non-offensive to neighbors, but their next door neighbor on the east side of their eight acres asked them to use chain link on their side, so they can watch the gentle animals. The only noise they make is a quiet hum. St. Anne said the neighbor’s dog is louder than all 12 of their llamas combined.

“We have our first cria. Llama babies are called cria. Her name is Juanita, and she is 5 months old. She is our meeter and greeter. She wants to see everyone and have her neck rubbed,” St. Anne said, “Cria can sell for anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000.”

The abbey’s residents get the llamas and training from Gayle Dumas, a breeder who owns 50 miniature llamas on a farm near Richmond, Va.

“The total population is very small. There are only 650 registered miniature llamas,” she said. “They have all the charm, personality and intelligence of full-sized llamas, but they also have the ease of handling and size of alpacas. They are herd animals, and they need the companionship of their own kind to thrive.”

They compete at miniature llama shows around the country and have done well. At a show in Kentucky earlier this year, St. Anne said they showed five llamas and got three grand champion awards and one reserve champion award.

“The more grand champion awards we get, the more that tells the llama world of our quality,” he said. “The ultimate is for one to get a triple crown of three grand championships. Josephina has two and must get one more before she ages out of her class next summer.”

They have plans to compete next year in shows in Nebraska, Iowa, Mi …
