One chance meeting for South, Waltham track

With Westford Academy’s decision to cancel school postponing the Newton South tracks teams’ Dual County League showdowns with the Grey Ghosts, the Lion boys and girls nevertheless made yesterday’s trip to the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center worthwhile with a sweep of Waltham.The Lion boys won 10 of 11 events, sweeping six, to cruise to an 81.5-13.5 victory while the South girls won eight events and swept two to claim a 79-16 win as each squad improved to 2-0 on the young season.Both Hawk squads, meanwhile, fell to 1-1.For the boys, senior Yong Cho was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring 15 points with three event wins. Cho won the 55-meter dash in 6.9 seconds, the 55-meter hurdles in 7.96 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 1 inch. Juniors Stephen Murray (300-meter dash, 39.12), Xhulio Uruci (1000, 2:52.25), Yuji Wakimoto (2-mile, 10:02.45) and Charles Hergrueter (high jump, 5-3) and seniors Ben Olins (600, 1:33.93) and Alex Long (mile, 4:42.73) each won their events as did the 4×400 relay team (3:42.77).Seniors Robert Rejek (55, 7.09), John Mitkevicius 300 (40.40), Andrew Woo (600, 1:36.95), Cameron Fen (mile, 4:45.89), senior Chris Kim second in shot put (40-6) and Igal Bubar (2-mile, 10:46.21), junior Kyle Olson (1000, 2:53.65) and sophomore Jeffery Alkins (long jump, 17-7) all placed second in their events.Seniors Emerson Shui (1000, 2:55.19) and Marcus Schneider (mile, 4:47.96), juniors Joseph Anderson (shot put, 35-2), William Iacobucci (55 dash, 7.26), Ben Weissmann (55 hurdles, 9.19) and Alex Pearce (2-mile, 11:00.48), sophomore Daniel Hurwitz (long jump, 16-5) and freshmen Cary Potochnik (300, 40.59) and Brooks Remy (high jump, 5-3) each finished third.Senior Nico Zayas led the Waltham boys, winning the shot put with a heave of 41-5. Junior Dylan Carnes placed second in the 55 hurdles (9.16), classmate Ivan Colon took second in the high jump (5-3) and junior Mike DeJulio was third in the 600 (1:38.61).For the South girls, senior Kelsey Karys was a double-winner, taking the mile in 5:18.10 and the 2-mile in 11:11.18. Senior Rachel Rubenstein and freshman Nicole Kesterberg tied for first in the high jump (4-9), while junior Ezra Banks won the 55 dash (7.61) and was second in the shot put (24-5). Seniors Nalis Mbianda (shot put, 36-1) and Bridget Dahlberg (600, 1:44.01), junior Christie Lee (long jump, 15-9) and the 4×400 quartet of senior Dani Pensack, sophomore Kathy O’Keefe, freshman Andrea Braver and Dahlberg (4:15.35) all won their events.Seniors Rachel Rubenstein (55 hurdles, 10.34) and Claire O’Brien (1000, 3:33.02), juniors Melanie Fineman (2-mile, 11:45.03), Katie Sandson (55 dash, 7.82) and Amitra Rao (600, 1:57.03) and sophomores Kathy O’Keefe (mile, 5:18.17) and Chloe Millman (long jump, 14-5) all claimed second place.Juniors Lauren Gabriel (55 hurdles, 10.46), Sara Chari (1000, 3:36.99) and Kayla Jackson (shot put, 23-9) and freshman Anna Laurence (mile, 5:57.09) all finished third.“I am excited about the quality of our marks across the team this early,” said South coach Steve McChesney. “We have shifted some kids around to feel what we thought might be holes when the season started and now we feel we have a really good front line in all events across the team.”Waltham sophomore Erika Shay won the 55-meter hurdles (9.32) and was third in the high jump (4-7), while classmate Kara Walsh won the 1000 in a DCL-best 3:20.33 (a 6-second PR). Sophomore Ivy Watts was second in 300-meter dash (44.81), junior Sabrina Zottola finished third in the 300 (47.24) and the long jump (14-4), senior Stephanie Ducas was third in the 2-mile (13:00.08) and junior Fantasia Brisson placed third in the 55 dash (8.06).Both South and Waltham return to RLTAC on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for another DCL regular-season meet. South will compete against Lincoln-Sudbury in a highly anticipated clash that may well decide the DCL title while Waltham faces Weston and L-S.
