Color Blind

writers often preoccupy about toy details, and i’m no exception. for the last month i’ve been trying to idol out how to describe the eyes of one of my characters. her eyes are blue; a exceptionally specific exceed of morose. i can assistance her face clearly in my mind, but try as i might i cannot come up with a chronicle of her eye color that satisfies me and conveys to the reader what i envision. yes, she has blue eyes, but they’re not solely blue. if you’re a writer, you perceive what i mean. no one ever discusses conspicuous writing stuff like this. only conclusively did i grow older a handout cheatsheet during a legend writing workshop from a renowned name architect who takes color names from cosmetic products owing her eye descriptions. i’ve on no occasion used it because i hate makeup and some of the color names are stupid (like plum brown — last time i checked, a brown plum was a prune. she had prune-colored eyes? i don’t think so.) aside from loyal people, food, weather and species oblige been my primary sources of eye color description inspiration. i also adore to read through narrative magazines for unique color names. fish story manufacturers never sell just blue yarn, you know. they sell hyacinth, night sky, dark teal, seafaring, regal, cadet, morning glory, sea spray, heather, delft, montana, cobalt, lake, beach party and periwinkle blue yarns. thanks to lion brand’s latest catalog, the next female character i write may end up with champagne-colored eyes.but none of those shades of depressed, beautiful as they are, peer my character’s eyes.i’m starting to wish i’d given her black or gray eyes. those are my two favorite eye colors to describe because you can find a ration of synonyms repayment for black and gray that don’t sound too hokey or overblown. you can overuse an eye color in fiction, so once i author a register a heroine with black or gray eyes i try to use different colors for at least the next five books. which is probably why i gave this silly ditz blue eyes. not that they’re just blue, you recognize. new writers may think inspect descriptions are tough to do in the beginning of your life’s work, but i think the more books you belittle delete, the more baffling the task becomes (if you’re not interested in repeating yourself over and over, that is.) after writing all these novels, i’ll admit it’s become a real chore to think up something i haven’t done.my guy has gorgeous hazel eyes, which he passed on to our son. our daughter got stuck with my genes, and our eyes are gray, green or blue, depending on the lighting and what color we wear. the department of transportation says they’re non-professional, my optometrist says they’re gray, and my mother says they’re blue. my daughter and i reprove them disoriented-colored to mask all the bases.but no, my character’s eyes are much lighter in color than ours, and they don’t turn sward or gray, so forget that.i should have given her brown eyes. i derive pleasure brown eyes. i grew up in a neighborhood chock full of beautiful latinas, and i think that’s why i’ve always envied girls with brown eyes. a mountains of my favorite female characters have big brown eyes. except this one. or i could give her glasses and cover them up. but actually very few of my characters weary glasses to correct vision. this is because i’ve lived in the find fault with things since i was three.i’ll keep working at it. no matter how original you try to be with describing eye color, eventually someone else is going to cook up the same idea. i’d not at all read a book with a character with opal-colored eyes, so i was feeling rather conceited and happy with myself when i used that to recite marco’s eyes in the juliana trilogy — until a few months later, when another author came out with the same description for her protag’s eyes.hmmmm. i wonder if i can get away with giving her blue opal eyes . . . related links:val kovalin over at obsidian reserve shelf has a great page here more longhand eye colors.hunger to know how eye color is passed along?

John Atta Mills has been sworn in as Ghana’s new president following a cliff-hanger election victory.

Mr Atta Mills, 64, took his oath of allegiance in front of thousands of people in Independence Square for the inauguration in the capital, Accra.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate beat the ruling party’s Nana Akufo-Addo in a hotly contested poll by a margin of less than 0.5% of votes.

President John Kufuor has stood down after serving the maximum two terms.

He is the second elected head of state in Ghana’s history to hand over to an opposition politician.

Loud cheers

The BBC’s Will Ross in the Accra says there is a carnival atmosphere in the capital.

Crowds began forming at the stadium before dawn - decked out in the national colours of green, yellow, red and black - amid an air of download fantasy movies intense excitement download adventure movie after one of the closest election races in Africa’s recent history.

Mr Atta Mills was dressed in a local kente cloth woven in the national colours, Reuters news agency reports.

After he was sworn in, he raised up the State Sword - representing government authority - to cheers from the crowd, the agency said.

A military unit then fired off a booming 21-gun salute.

“It is a dawn of a new era for Ghana and I hope to tap the experiences of the two former presidents… to build a better Ghana,” AFP news agency quotes Mr Ata Mills as saying in his first address as president, referring to Mr Kufuor and his predecessor, Jerry Rawlings.

There were loud cheers when he thanked the man he narrowly beat in the election.

“During the elections Ghana’s democracy was stretched to the limits but at the end of the day the sovereign will of the people prevailed,” he said.

Our reporter says the fact that Mr Akufo-Addo attended the inauguration is a sign that Ghana has a relatively mature democracy and is a long way ahead of many other African countries.

Several foreign dignitaries attended the ceremony, including several heads of state from the region.

The elder daughter of Pakistan’s assassinated former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, has written a rap song expressing grief over her death.

The song by Bakhtawar Bhutto, 18, comes a year after the assassination and is entitled “I would take the pain away”.

It pays tribute to her mother’s “crazy courage” and describes her as “the epitome of benevolence”.

It has been played regularly on state-run television and has been posted on the video-sharing website YouTube.

‘Weeping’

“My mother was murdered. I don’t even comprehend. Was it worth dying for? I’m walking through screened doors,” Bakhtawar sings in English.

“No comfort or ease. I’m begging you please, God bless the deceased,” she laments in the song.

Praising her mother’s “beauty and intelligence”, the song says that the “whole world is weeping” over the murder.

“Shot in the back of your ear, so young in 54th year, murdered with three kids left behind, a hopeless nation without you, you are in all their hearts,” it says.

The teenager, a student at Edinburgh University, then repeats the chorus line “I would take the pain away”.

A video to accompany the song shows footage and photographs of her smiling mother while election campaigning shortly before her death in Rawalpindi in December 2007 and of public grieving after her death.

Ms Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack on her convoy - blamed on Islamic militants - as it travelled through the city’s Liaquat Bagh park. She had just finished addressing an election rally.

Information Minister Sherry Rehman - who for several years was an aide to Ms Bhutto - told the Reuters news agency that Bakhtawar wrote the lyrics and music while studying in Edinburgh.

“It’s a tribute of a grieving daughter to her iconic and loving mother,” she said.

Ms Rehman said that while music was a hobby for Bakhtawar, she had no plan to pursue it as a career.

The song has had mixed reviews in the British press.

“While her dirge-like rap is unlikely to secure her a Grammy, the seemingly heartfelt tribute might win her some fans,” The Independent newspaper says.

The Guardian says that she uses the song to “pour out her anguish”.

Ms Bhutto’s widower and Bakhtawar’s father, Asif Ali Zardari, became president of Pakistan in September.

Their son, Bilawal, 20, studies at Oxford University in the UK and another daughter, Aseefa, 14, also studies abroad.

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday, however you celebrate. I just got back from the family festivities myself and am just getting around to the news.

Everybody loves Obama. He has an 82 percent favorable rating on his handling of the transition. Best numbers of any incoming president in the past three decades.

Nobody likes Bush. The LAT looks at the legacy. Shorter: The arrogant SOB singlehandedly turned us from a major world power into the laughingstock of the planet.

Cabdrollery has a very good tool for tracking how often your Congresslizards voted to enable him to do it.

And this is just great. It’s not enough that our local law enforcement is killing people regularly with tasers, now they’re about to get a new toy. Pain beam weapons. Some kind of microwave guns that cause “skin pain.” If memory serves the Pentagon has been working on this weaponry for some time and it creates a sensation of burning. Like the taser, it’s billed as non-lethal but there have been real burn injuries in the testing phase.

Tourneau watch

On a much brighter note, a A real Christmas miracle story. Family home gets saved by a friend’s blog post. Very uplifting. I recommend it.

Dan has his awards for the best music of 2008. Interesting choices.

Rest in peace, Harold Pinter. He was an amazing playwright.

And finally, SoBeale remembers the ghosts of Christmas presents past.

Prominent Zimbabwean human rights activist Jestina Mukoko, who went missing for three weeks, has appeared in court in the capital, Harare.

The state-run Herald newspaper says Ms Mukoko is charged with attempting to recruit people for military training to try to overthrow the government.

It is unclear when or where the director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project has been over the past three weeks.

The police denied opposition claims that they had been holding her.

After the brief court appearance on Wednesday, officials said the case was being referred up to the High Court and that Ms Mukoko and eight others would be remanded in custody.

A judge ruled that the nine should be taken to private clinics under police supervision, but police are said to have ignored the order.

It was not immediately clear where the activists were being held.

The Herald reported a police statement claiming that one of the defendants had tried to recruit a police constable to undergo military training in Botswana.

The training would have been used to forcibly depose President Robert Mugabe’s government and replace it with one led by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, said the statement.

Skytrain

Ms Mukoko is one of more than 40 human rights activists and opposition supporters who Mr Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) say have been abducted in the past two months.

International pressure

A Johannesburg-based Zimbabwean human rights lawyer, Annah Moyo, said the charges against Ms Mukoko and others could be used by the Mugabe regime as an excuse to declare a state of emergency and withdraw from power-sharing talks.

“They are trying to come up with confessions from these activists… that they have been part of the people who have been trying to overthrow the Zimbabwean government,” she said.

“This is an indication of a government that is desperate to do whatever it can find to try and hold on to power.”

On Wednesday morning, lawyers in Zimbabwe said they had confirmation that Ms Mukoko was being held at a police station in Harare.

They also said they had managed to locate 14 activists at police stations, but that others were still missing.

Ms Mukoko’s whereabouts had remained a mystery since she was allegedly abducted from her home outside Harare on 3 December by 15 armed men.

In an unusual move, a High Court judge had ordered police to search for her and told the national Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation to run radio and television appeals for information.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Irene Petras of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said Ms Mukoko and others arrested had “fundamental rights and freedoms which are being violated with complete impunity”.

Ms Petras claimed the detainees had been held at unknown locations and possibly subjected to torture and degrading treatment.

Members of the lawyers group took to the streets of Harare last week to highlight Ms Mukoko’s plight, carrying banners protesting against other alleged abductions.

Ms Mukoko’s court appearance comes as international pressure on Mr Mugabe is mounting.

The leader of the governing ANC party in neighbouring South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has described the situation in Zimbabwe as “utterly untenable”.

Meanwhile Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he was “very deeply disappointed” that South Africa has failed to stand up to Mr Mugabe.

But the BBC’s Rachel Harvey reports from neighbouring South Africa that there is no sign for now of an attempt to turn rhetoric into action.
