Six musicals and two plays highlight season at Colonial

Usually when a Broadway musical plays in Boston, the star is elsewhere. But singer Harry Connick Jr. will make ‘nice work’ of Gershwin standards in the world premiere of the new musical, “Nice Work If You Can Get It” at the Colonial Theatre this holiday season.    “The man is easy on the eyes and a musical genius, but who knew he’s also hilarious,” the show’s writer, Joe DiPietro, said to 800 people who packed the Colonial Theatre in Boston  Monday night for the announcement of the 2008-09 Broadway Across America lineup. “He’s a huge Gershwin fan, and he wanted to return to Broadway.”     One of the season’s six musicals and two plays, “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” a Prohibition-era comedy, will have its pre-Broadway engagement Dec. 16- Jan. 11. It reunites Connick with director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall, the talented duo of “The Pajama Game,” which won two Tony Awards in 2006.    “It’s part of a wonderful tradition of a new musical trying out in Boston,” said Marshall.  “You’ll be the first to see it right here on this stage.”   The season is bookended by two groundbreakers, each of which won Tony Awards for Best Musical, 31 years apart: “A Chorus Line,” the 1976 winner, and “Spring Awakening,” last year’s winner. It also has a second world premiere and pre-Broadway tryout – a re-imagined production of Lerner and Loewe’s “Brigadoon” Oct. 14 to Nov. 9 at the Colonial.   “”“”“”     Whether intentional or coincidental, the season has a pronounced youthful orientation. Four musicals, as well as one drama, focus on the hopes, angst, traumas and dreams of adolescents or young adults.     In many ways the original ”reality show,” “A Chorus Line” follows 17 hopeful, desperate young dancers as they audition for a Broadway chorus line. It plays Sept. 11 to Oct. 5 at the Colonial.   A coming of age rock musical, “Spring Awakening” explores teen morality and sexuality in all its complexity and passion. It runs April 28 to May 24 at the Colonial.    “Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage”  makes its East coast premiere Feb. 7 to March 15 at The Opera House.  Also based on a film, “Legally Blonde The Musical”  comes to The Opera House Oct.  28 to Nov. 9.   “A Bronx Tale,”  a one-man show starring actor Chazz Palminteri,  runs March 31 to April 11 at the Colonial.   Lastly, “Frost/Nixon, which” stars Stacey Keach in a drama based on a series of 1977 television interviews in which host David Frost faced off against former President Richard Nixon  is scheduled for Jan. 27 to Feb. 8 at the Colonial.    For more information, go to www.BroadwayAcrossAmerica.com.
