“Understand” This

For fence-sitters out there, this evening’s presidential debate presented a choice between two very different characters, pushing two very different messages.

John McCain apparently went into the debate with one paramount goal — to convey to viewers that there is much Barack Obama doesn’t know about … fill … in … the … blank.

“What Sen. Obama doesn’t understand …” led off many of the Republican’s sentences. He used the word naïveté to describe his rival, saying at another point: “There are some advantages to experience and knowledge and judgment, and I donât believe that Sen. Obama has the knowledge and experience and has made the wrong judgment in a number of areas.”

“Sen. Obama still doesn’t understand or just doesn’t quite get” that failure in Iraq would fuel al Qaeda, McCain said.

“You donât do that, you donât say that out loud,” McCain admonished his Democratic rival, saying Obama should never threaten to cut off aid to Pakistan.

“I donât think that Sen. Obama understands that there was a failed state in Pakistan,” he said later.

So if the McCain folks have their way, undecideds will hear McCain’s pitch tonight for his experience and heed his caution that Obama isn’t ready to be president.

In an otherwise solid performance in which McCain ably touted his record in breaking with his party on immigration and torture, his service to country and his reputation for limiting spending, there was an edge, though, an aggressiveness to McCain’s voice and approach. He appeared never to meet Obama’s eye, even when speaking to him, and despite moderator Jim Lehrer’s early attempts to get the candidates to address each other:

“I am just determined to get you all to talk to each other,” Lehrer implored.

Obama did just that, repeatedly speaking to “John,” as he addressed the Republican nominee. Obama repeatedly said McCain was “right” on a range of issues, from detainee policy at Guantanamo Bay to torture. He praised viagra him whenever possible, despite the chill emanating from across the dais.

His message? Maturity, decency, bipartisanship. A new way of treating adversaries.

“We are less respected now than we were eight years ago or even four years ago,” Obama advised.

McCain hit Obama hard for seeking earmarks for his home state and only abandoning the popular practice of securing government pork for pet projects at home once he launched his presidential bid. He chastised Obama for not supporting the surge and tried at one point, though Obama pushed back, to say that the Democrat voted against funding for the troops. McCain hammered Obama for proposing what he said was $800B in new government spending and for his willingness to hand the nation’s health care system to the federal government to manage.

“I want to cut spending,” McCain said. “I want to keep taxes low.”

Obama said President Bush and McCain took the nation to war in Iraq instead of turning attention to Afghanistan to capture Osama bin Laden and root out his terrorist network.

Debate poll

“Sen. McCain and President Bush had a different judgement,” Obama said. “I wish I had been wrong, for the sake of the country, and they had been right.”

Obama criticized McCain for voting with the president 90 percent of the time, noting that it’s the Bush administration that has presided over an “orgy of spending.” McCain, Obama noted, voted for every one of the president’s budgets.

No new substantive ground was broken tonight, but perhaps voters saw the candidates at their most authentic. McCain, bruising for a fight, knowing that he’s had a lousy, flailing week, and that he needed a strong showing. Resilient. The fighter he is.

“I donât think I need any on the job training,” McCain said. “Iâm ready to go with it, right now.”

Obama stood strong by his Democratic beliefs that government at its best helps folks in the middle make ends meet, get an education, hold onto their jobs. He showed that even as McCain took it to him, he would not be cowed. He gave the most firm answer of the contest on a matter was a favorite Hillary Clinton hit and dogged him through the primaries — if he said he would meet with leaders of rogue nations without preconditions.

“I reserve the right as President of the United States to meet with anybody, at the time and place of my choosing, if it guarantees the security and safety” of the nation, he said.

#408. The Double Greeting

i force to confess something. i went to oklahoma city last week hoping that i would become an instant christian thousandaire after speaking at the ministrycom conference, be given the keys to an worldwide ministry named “side huggery” or at the bare minimum, be recruited as a breakdancer championing their new nba team. although none of those things happened, i am happy to report that i did successfully keep off using a “double greeting” in my discourse.the double greeting is a pretty mean illness that infects ministers at the very beginning of sermons. here’s what it looks like:minister:“good morning!”crowd:“good morning.”minister:(sensing that the crowd’s volume or enthusiasm did not meet his expectation, he decides to shame everyone into a more satisfactory response.)“i said ‘good morning!’”crowd:(a little embarrassed or annoyed that their proper morning failed to match some unspoken presumption, the horde raises their voice and repeats.)“good morning!”help:(assessing the new “good morning” and finding it satisfactory, he releases the crowd from this inconsistent greeting torture and grades the response.)“that’s more like it.”although i was able to navigate my way around using a paired greeting when i spoke, i still have three questions about this important issue.1. when a priest does this, is the object based on volume level or percent of force participation? repayment for instance, if the guy that each time screams “jesus!!” at concerts is attending that sunday and yells “good morning,” can we leave alone the double greeting? or do we basic at least 51% of the drive on board?2. have you ever had a minister criticize the double greeting on jesus? that’s fun. after you give a thunderous enough “good morning” he’ll say something take pleasure in “that’s better, that’s the species of good morning jesus deserves.” does jesus agree with that? is he pro treacherous card or anti replicate greeting? does he high five enoch when it happens or feel thrown comprised in the bus and want to say, “whoa, whoa, whoa, i never asked for the double greeting.”3. is there a humanity record for the most consecutive rounds of hello? theoretically, if the minister has genuinely high standards or the crowd doesn’t ever fully participate, it could go on for eternity. just good morning, after good morning, after good morning.even though i dodged a bullet and managed to get out of oklahoma city without dropping a double greeting, the temptation remains. if you ever assent to me do a dual card please immediately recover consciousness up on stage and confiscate one of the deathly white pumas i will inevitably wearing. it will be hard for me to speak while only wearing one shoe but it’s the solely way i’ll learn.

Congress, administration craft financial rescue (AP) Сентябрь 20, 2008

WASHINGTON - Faltering financial institutions whose toxic assets have brought markets to the brink of catastrophe could unload their bad debt on the government, and in turn the taxpayer, under a half-trillion dollar bailout being crafted by the Bush administration and Congress.

Top Republicans and Democrats and their aides planned to work through the weekend with administration officials to hammer out the proposal — the most sweeping government intervention to rescue failing financial institutions since the Great Depression. They hoped the bill could pass the House and Senate as early as next week.

The administration is asking Congress for far-reaching new powers to take over troubled mortgages from banks and other companies, including purchasing sour mortgage-backed securities.

President Bush on Friday acknowledged risks to taxpayers, but he declared, “The risk of not acting would be far higher.”

Congressional leaders and presidential candidates in both parties said they would put aside partisan differences and work together on a package that was vital to the economy.

Democrats are insisting the package include mortgage help to let struggling homeowners avoid foreclosures.

They’re also considering attaching additional middle-class assistance to the legislation, despite a request from Bush to avoid adding controversial items that could delay action. An expansion of jobless benefits was one possibility.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke briefed lawmakers by conference call Friday, painting a grave picture of an economy on the edge of a major recession and telling them that action was urgent and imperative.

In a session with House Democrats, they described a plan where the government would in essence set up reverse auctions, putting up money for a class of distressed assets — such as loans that are delinquent but not in default — and financial institutions would compete for how little they would accept for the investments, said Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., who participated in the call.

“You give them good cas

Hume reported Michelle Obama’s “cute” comment without noting that she also said, “I’m talking about me”

On the September 18 edition of Fox News’ Special Report, while reporting on Michelle Obama’s appearance at a women’s roundtable in Charlotte, North Carolina, host Brit Hume said, “While not directly mentioning Sarah Palin by name, Obama said, quote, ‘People shouldn’t make a decision this time based on, “I like that guy,” or, “She’s cute acheter cialis.” ‘ ” However, Hume did not note that Obama said “I’m talking about me” following her comment, which, by contrast, MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell showed in her coverage of Obama’s comment. The Associated Press reported that Obama “did not talk about Palin directly in her remarks.”

From the September 18 edition of Fox News’ Special Report with Brit Hume:

HUME: Michelle Obama, meanwhile, is encouraging women to make their voting decisions based on the issues, not personalities. Obama was in Charlotte, North Carolina, for a women’s roundtable on the economy.

While not directly mentioning Sarah Palin by name, Obama said, quote, “People shouldn’t make a decision this time based on, ‘I like that guy,’ or, ‘She’s cute.’ ” Obama says her husband is the only candidate focused on equal pay, health care, and other women’s issues.

We’ll update the story about Governor Palin’s emails winding up on the World Wide Web. That’s a little later. First, though, if you think the economy’s shaky here, wait till you see our next story from Russia. Stay tuned.

From the 3 p.m. ET hour of MSNBC Live on September 18:

NORAH O’DONNELL levitra (anchor): She was doing a women’s roundtable, and she talked about why and how people should vote. Take a listen to what she said.

OBAMA [video clip]: We may decide to do something that is different from Barack Obama, but we should decide that based on our self-interests and what we think is best. And the only way that will happen is that if people are paying attention and neighbors are talking to neighbors and family members are talking to family members.

People shouldn’t make a decision this time based on, “I like that guy.” Or, you know, “She’s cute.” You know, this isn’t –

[applause]

OBAMA: And I’m talking about me.

McCain, Obama blast bank regulators Сентябрь 15, 2008

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama on Monday both blasted regulators and managers for failing to head off the financial woes rocking Wall Street and called for an overhaul of the rules governing financial institutions.

Sen. Joe Biden says that McCain does not think he has a responsibility to help those hurt by the economy.

Sen. John McCain urges replacing the “outdated patchwork quilt” of regulations governing Wall Street.

The presidential nominees calls for reform came as Lehman Brothers, a 158-year-old investment bank that has been a pillar of Wall Street, announced Monday it was filing for bankruptcy, while Bank of America said it was buying another Wall Street institution, Merrill Lynch.

Lehman Brothers has been hurt by losses in the real estate market, and its stock value has declined 94 percent this year. Merrill Lynch also has been struck by real estate loses.

The problems with Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch erupted as financial markets were still recovering from the government takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Both institutions had experienced troubles as a result of the crisis in the mortgage industry caused by a record number of defaults and foreclosures.

"Our economy — I think still, the fundamentals of our economy are strong — but these are very, very difficult times. And I promise you we will never put America in this position again."

"We will clean up Wall Street, we will reform government," the Arizona Republican declared, adding that a top priority of his administration would be to "replace the outdated patchwork quilt of regulatory oversight and bring transparency and accountability to Wall Street."
