Drama Club shines at theatre conference

Members of the Saugus High School Drama Club attended the New England Theater Conference in Warwick Rhode Island from Nov. 20-22.

 The students participated in the High School Odyssey, which is a series of workshops culminating in an audition process and ending with an award ceremony. There were 16 participating schools in attendance from all across New England. 

Saugus award winners for this year’s Odyssey include Brian Barry, Katie Noyes and Joe Talluto for acting. These students had to prepare and perform a two-minute monologue.

 Stephen LaMonica won in the vocal category. He had to prepare two contrasting songs and was also asked to perform at the NETC awards banquet on Saturday evening, a great honor, said SHS Drama director Nancy Lemoine.

 Megan Joyce, Sarah White, Lea Fuchs and Krista Christensen were awarded a technical award for set and light design for “Best Use of Perspective.” 

Friday evening the students attended the opening performance of the Trinity Repertory’s production of “A Christmas Carol.”

On Saturday the students participated in a series of lectures and workshops including talk back sessions with: Andrea Mcardle (the original Annie); Kady Huffman, a Tony award winner for her role in “The Producer’s”; and Holyoke native Micheal Berresse, an award winning Broadway actor, singer and director.

Seventeen students attended the conference, accompanied by Nancy Lemoine, drama director, and Amy Menkin student teacher. Mrs. Naomi Gilman chaperoned. 

This is the fifth consecutive year Saugus has been able to participate in this event.

Roasted Butternut Squash Farro Salad

i still had some leftover butternut squash and i was thinking about doing a whole smidgen salad with it. over the last while i have been enjoying exploring total grains and a specific of my favorite ways to take them is in simple salads. one of my favorite whole grains is farro as it is has a really nice chewy texture like pasta cooked al dente that i deep down like. i was ratiocinative of a simple squash squash farro salad. since pundit goes really well with squash and since i had some in my fridge it was a no brainier to add it. i like the way that balsamic vinegar adds a touch of sweet along with the tart and i thought that it would work well with the roasted butternut squash. walnuts are one of my favorites and i wanted to supplement them to the salad and i thought that it would be the reliable time to try out the walnut unguent that i had recently picked up. the walnuts were toasted to admit defeat give out them that perfect texture and to bring out their full flavour. of course i could not pass up on the unintentional to go on increase something green and i worn it to dig some swiss chard. the roasted butternut squash farro salad turned out pretty correct. i really liked the way the roasted butternut squash worked with the chewy farro and the salad had a really nice flavour. i enjoyed the salad warm the first night and i enjoyed it cool the next morning as a quick breakfast previous running out the door.i hope that everybody celebrating thanksgiving today has a great one!ingredients:2 cups butternut squash (peeled, seeded and cut into 1 inch cubes)1 tablespoon olive oil1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar1 tablespoon sage (chopped)2 cups cooked farro (cooked as directed on package)1/2 bunch swiss chard (cut into bit sized pieces and wilted)1 nuisance red onion (chopped)1/4 cup feta (crumbled)1/4 cup walnuts (toasted)2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar1 tablespoon walnut lubricate (or olive oil)salt and spot to taste1 teaspoon sage (chopped)directions:1. toss the squash in the oil and vinegar along with the sage.2. roast in a preheated 400f oven tossing after 15 minutes until the squash is gig, about 30 minutes.3. mix the whole.almost identical recipes:roasted butternut squash lasagnabutternut squash, italian sausage and sage pastaturkey and squash “thanksgiving” risotto

Yates to start at QB for Tar Heels

Chabad Lubavitch Jewish Center Taken By Islamic Terrorists in Mumbai; Jews Targeted, Taken Hostage

In addition to taking Americans and Britons hostage and targeting them for death in today’s terrorist attacks in India, Islamic terrorists have also overtaken the Chabad Lubavitch center in India and taken an Israeli Jewish family hostage. I have a special place in my heart for Chabad Lubavitch because this group has always been kind to me and made it easier for me to practice Jewish observances. the situation is grim recently wednesday in mumbai (bombay) india where reports of more than 80 dead and 250 wounded are seeping over of the beleaguered city. of smashing concern is the silence from chabad’s representatives to mumbai, rabbi gavriel and rivka holtzberg. no a man from the chabad center impotência sexual has been heard from since the attacks.

The dead and wounded are victims of a sophisticated plot in which seven locations throughout the city were attacked by terrorists. Several of the city’s most exclusive hotels, a restaurant, train station, and hotel were bombed. The attacks come as the country is consumed by controversial elections.

The city, which is India’s financial capital, plays host to many foreigners and their embassies are assisting in the search and rescue efforts.

Lubavitch personnel in Bangkok, Israel and New York are working closely with the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the U.S. government to help establish contact with the Holtzbergs and other missing persons in the Chabad House area.

Mumbai’s Chabad House, situated near the sites of destruction, is a popular stop for Israeli tourists. The Holtzbergs offer a host of programs, including providing kosher food, to locals and visitors alike.

I am praying for these people and also all of my innocent fellow Americans targeted by today’s attacks. And I ask that you do, too.

A plot to bomb Penn Station, this brutal set of attacks across India, and dozens of attacks a week around the world for the last decade or more. All perpetrated by the so-called “Religion of Peace”.

When will we learn that Islam is not the religion of peace and is not to be treated with kid gloves, but with iron fists?

Fan Rant: Where Is the ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ Special Edition DVD?

with thanksgiving coming up, i thought i’d revisit planes, trains & automobiles, an individual of the few movies without delay connected to that holiday and a winning comedy classic in its own right. it had been several years since i’d watched it, and i assumed that in the meantime it had been released on some kind of concerted edition dvd. last year was its 20th anniversary, in truthfully — a fine time to put out a fine-looking disc with lots of extras.or so you’d think! as it turns out, planes, trains & automobiles has only legitimately been released on dvd once, method back in 2000, with a poor video give and no extras whatsoever. not even a trailer viagra bestellen. not peaceful the extremely scenes that are commonly included when the film airs on television. deepening this cape is the fact that, as several reviewers noted at the time, paramount’s announcement of the dvd had promised it would have deleted scenes. why the studio changed its mind at the last minute no one knows, but it sure disappointed people in 2000 who had been looking forward to the dvd. the film was released again this summer as put asunder give up of vh1’s “i love the ’80s” series, but it still didn’t be struck by any extras and was essentially a rip-off in new packaging. the only perk was the incorporation of one additional backdrop, of neal and del eating food on the airplane, that’s often shown in the tv version. that’s hardly a good enough reason to re-buy the disc, notwithstanding. why is there no special issue of this movie? it’s a perennial favorite. it is beloved. it is oft-quoted (”those aren’t pillows!”). it regularly appears on polls of movie fans’ favorite comedies. its very title has enhance shorthand in support of any false step punctuated by mishaps and setbacks, as in, “our vacation to mexico was a disaster — it was a thorough planes, trains & automobiles situation.” you would allow it, right?

Following discouraging reports earlier this week that Tom Cruise’s upcoming madcap Nazi adventure, Valkyrie, is a “character-driven suspense thriller” that’s actually “pretty good” comes hope in the form of an anonymously sourced online review! “You almost start to laugh,” a “source” tells the Scoop’s Courtney Hazlett. “His character is resisting it but you never forget it’s Tom Cruise saying ‘Heil Hitler.’ It’s funny and shocking at the same time.” Also potentially hilarious: a scene in which Nazi Tom Cruise removes his glass eye. “It was disgusting.
