India truck strike over fuel cost

Posted on Январь 6th, 2009 in Uncategorized by thedarkthorn

A transport strike is beginning to bite in India with operators pulling millions of trucks off the roads to demand a lowering of diesel prices.

The operators are also protesting against “steep” road tolls imposed by the government.

Talks with the government broke down over the weekend and up to six million trucks went off the roads as the indefinite strike began on Monday.

A prolonged strike could push up costs of essential goods, analysts say.

Inflation

Truck operators say they have been hit hard by the rising oil prices and the economic slowdown.

“We are on an indefinite strike until our demands are met,” news agency Reuters quoted Charan Singh Lohara, president of the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), as saying.

The organisation says it represents six million trucks in India.

“The government is giving concessions and bailout packages to so many industries. Why not us when we are struggling to repay loans with high fuel prices, high prices of tyres and numerous taxes?” he asked.

It is too early for the strike to have had any firm impact, but if the protest continues, prices of essential goods are likely to rise, correspondents say.

Indian consumers are yet to recover from last year’s high inflation figures which reached double digits a few months ago before coming down in the past few weeks.

D. Tchurovsky on “A new world order “

The phrase “new world order”, did not have substantive definition. For me personally, “new world order” is something like Hitler’s New Order, but on global scale; i.e. transition from “Nazi state corporatocracy” to global corporatocracy, not so brutal and violent, but still excessively aggressive and hypocrite.

Dawn of the dead

The idea of a Global Strategic Council, or reshaping G-8 to G-10 is not a solution at all. Alexandrian solutions to Gordian knots of the 21st century is in creating fundamentally different decision-making mechanism and wiping out 19th century political system, which was badly corrupted during the last century. Now political parties are out of date monsters, something like medieval religious orders. “Western democracy” or political system of today is not a democracy at all but a corporate oligarchy and orchestrated corporate propaganda.

Instead to duplicate international organisations like G-8 and UN (highly ineffective however) and multiply bureaucracy, emerging global problems should be addressed, not by elected “professional politics”, advised by experts, but by experts themselves.

Poor Spore Performance on Your New Notebook

spore, the popular “casual” game from ea, has received as much sales and fanfare as it has controversy from its drm policies. spore sold 1m copies and 25m creations were created in its first 2 weeks so no bromide questions its reputation. but, does anyone question the quality of the visual experience between dissimilar notebook technologies? they should, as there are big differences that could really impact their enjoyment. inseparable would expect that today on modern notebooks these differences wouldn’t exist but they definitely do. related posts:

Bush blames Hamas for fighting in Gaza

Posted on Январь 3rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by thedarkthorn

JERUSALEM (CNN) — Israeli warplanes continued to pound Hamas targets in Gaza on Friday as the world waited to see whether Israel would launch a ground attack.

Qassam missiles launch Friday from Hamas-controlled Gaza.

Smoke rises after an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Friday morning.

The Israeli government has said the airstrikes, aimed at stopping Hamas from firing rockets into southern Israel, are only the beginning of a wider military operation.

Israel has moved tanks to the outskirts of Gaza and called up at least 2,000 army reservists.

Israel Defense Forces spokeswoman Avital Leibovitch said ground forces are prepared to enter Gaza when they receive orders to do so.

Meanwhile, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal promised bloodshed if Israeli troops invade.

"As for you, the soldiers of the enemy whose leadership are getting you ready to enter Gaza in a ground attack, you need to know that doom will await you and you will be killed, injured and captured," Meshaal, speaking in Syria, told Al Jazeera television network Friday. "If the enemy got into Gaza, our people will fight from one street to the next, from one house to the other, and on every inch of the land."

Leibovitch said Israel’s ground troops are better prepared for fighting than they may have been in the past.

In 2006, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert acknowledged that mistakes were made during an Israeli invasion against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah declared victory after Israeli troops withdrew, and the majority of Israelis said they did not feel that either side had won.

Among Palestinians killed Friday were three boys playing in a lot next to a home belonging to a Hamas military leader in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza, Palestinian officials said.

President Bush, in a radio address to air Saturday, blamed Hamas for the fighting and deaths in Gaza, saying militants committed an act of terrorism when they renewed the launching of rockets into Israel last month.

Don’t Miss

"In response to these attacks on their people, the leaders of Israel have launched military operations on Hamas positions in Gaza," Bush said in the remarks, released Friday by the White House. "As a part of their strategy, Hamas terrorists often hide within the civilian population, which puts innocent Palestinians at risk."

Robert Serry, the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, said much of Gaza’s infrastructure has

Leap year Zune glitch persists for some

Posted on Январь 1st, 2009 in Uncategorized by thedarkthorn

(CNN) — Many Zune owners successfully revived their failed music players Thursday morning, while others were still unable to overcome a leap year-related glitch that caused thousands of the devices to simultaneously stop working on New Year’s Eve.

Microsoft issued the first Zune portable music player in 2006 to compete with the iPod.

Microsoft issued the first Zune portable music player in 2006 to compete with the iPod.

"Mine is back up and working as of a minute ago! Thanks Zune Team," a user named "blcknwhte" posted at 9:19 a.m. ET on the Zune Web site’s forum.

"I’m glad things are back to normal but this was a major inconvenience," posted someone named JaximFlash. "I have 2 Zune 30s and I had made a playlist of songs to play during a New Year’s Eve party."

Microsoft Corp., maker of the Zune, said a bug in the internal clock driver, related to the way the device handles a leap year, caused the malfunction in older Zune 30GB models.

Matt Akers of the Zune Product Team wrote Wednesday on Zune.net that the problem should resolve itself after 7 a.m. ET Thursday. The Zune support page says users should allow the internal battery to fully drain, then recharge by connecting the Zune to a computer or AC power after noon GMT (7 a.m. ET) on New Year’s Day.

"Once the battery has sufficient power, the player should start normally. No other action is required — you can go back to using your Zune!" the site says.

But some Zune owners still reported problems rebooting their MP3 players Thursday.

"It’s 9:15 a.m. [ET] and my Zune is looking just like it did yesterday," posted one user. "Went through the proper steps and still no go. Anybody have any ideas?"

"Mine doesn’t work either, and yes, I can read and follow instructions. I did so three times," posted another Zune owner at 10:17 a.m. ET. "I then called tech support, they told me to charge it for 3 hours, and if that didn’t work to call them back."

The mysterious problem surfaced late Tuesday and early Wednesday as Internet message boards were flooded with complaints about Zunes freezing, prompting Y2K-like speculation about end-of-year hardware or software problems.

"It seems that every Zune on the planet has just frozen up and will not work," posted a Mountain Home, Idaho, user on CNN’s iReport.com. "I have 3 and they all in the same night stopped working."

Another iReporter said he was working the night shift at a Toys R Us store in Puerto Rico when his Zune player and the Zunes of four co-workers all failed about 1:30 a.m. ET Wednesday. iReport.com: They all froze up

"It froze and there was no way to turn it off so you just have to wait until the batteries went dead. You can’t push any buttons or anything," Carlos Colon told CNN.

Some Zune users dubbed the crisis "Y2K9" or "Z2K9," a reference to New Year’s Eve and concerns over potential widespread computer failures on January 1, 2000 — fears that proved unfounded.

Microsoft says it will keep users posted via the tech-support page on http://www.zune.net/en-us/support/zune30.htm.

Microsoft released its first Zune 30GB music player, a competitor to Apple’s popular iPod, in 2006. No widespread glitches have been reported this week in its second-generation 80GB or 120GB models.

2008: A Year For Songs, Not Albums

by robin hilton each december, bob and i begin our annual debate all about which is better: a top 10 list of the year’s best songs, or a top 10 list of the year’s excellent albums. i’ve usually argued that we should nave more on albums. a list of songs just doesn’t seem as substantive; besides, the sample for most year-end lists has long been albums. just look at all the other music sites and magazines out there. but for the past eight years, bob has argued that the growing popularity of digital music, which allows people to swallow specific songs as contrasted with of whole albums, makes individual songs more apt. (for the record, i’ve always won this debate.) this year, for the first time in our eight-year-long ponder over, i agree with him. for the past month and a half, i’ve been trying to finalize my personal list of the year’s top 10 albums, and i neutral can’t do it. i even-handed can’t come up with 10 albums i felt that strongly about in 2008. “iamundernodisguise” by school of seven bells is an amazing cut, but i wouldn’t say the album it’s from, alpinisms, belongs among the year’s most revered cds. the canadian triad plants & animals bring off out one of the year’s most astonishing songs, “bye bye bye,” but the rest of the band’s album, parc avenue, was largely forgettable. bon iver aside, not anyone of the following albums, as a whole, would end up on a top 10 list for me. but i spent more while listening to, loving, crying and laughing over these songs than any others: 1. “time to pretend” by mgmt, from oracular spectacular: this is, by to this point in time b to a certain extent, my favorite song of the year. the lyrics are such a wrenching upset of hope and remorse. “time to pretend” may yell out vituperate like a simple techno-electro gambol capture to some people, but it at the end of the day touched me, very much. var so = further swfobject(”/player/media1/mediaplayer.swf”, “mediaplayer1″, “400″, “20″ download action movies, “8″, “#ffffff”); so.addparam(”allowscriptaccess”, “samedomain”); so.addparam(”allowfullscreen”, “true”); so.addvariable(”callback”, “http://www.npr.org/player/media1/track.php?log=1″) drama movies; so.addvariable(”file”, “http://pd.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/blog/2008/12/20081224_blog_timetopretend.mp3″); so.write(”flashcontent20081224″); 2. “the wolves (act i and ii)” by bon iver, from for emma, forever ago: we’ve exhausted even ourselves talking about how good-looking and perfect the bon iver record is. if i did present itself up with a list of the finish 10 albums of 2008, it’d be no. 1. it’s hard to pick the best cut from it, but “the wolves” always stood out proper for me. var so = new swfobject(”/player/media1/mediaplayer.swf”, “mediaplayer1″, “400″, “20″, “8″, “#ffffff”); so.addparam(”allowscriptaccess”, “samedomain”); so.addparam(”allowfullscreen”, “true”); so.addvariable(”callback”, “http://www.npr.org/player/media1/track.php?log=1″); so.addvariable(”file”, “http://pd.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/blog/2008/12/20081224_blog_thewolves.mp3″); so.write(”flashcontent20081224″); 3. “business time” by exaltation of larks of the conchords, from lam out of the conchords: this was a viral hit on youtube long before it was released on cd, so it might feel a trivial tired to some people. but i’ve never laughed so hard as when i word go heard it, and it can hushed make me smile. if i’m judging songs based on their ability to fill out c draw up me regard something, anything, then this track needs to be near the excel of the tabulate. var so = new swfobject(”/player/media1/mediaplayer.swf”, “mediaplayer1″, “400″, “20″, “8″, “#ffffff”); so.addparam(”allowscriptaccess”, “samedomain”); so.addparam(”allowfullscreen”, “true”); so.addvariable(”callback”, “http://www.npr.org/player/media1/track.php?log=1″); so.addvariable(”file”, “http://pd.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/blog/2008/12/20081224_blog_businesstime.mp3″); so.write(”flashcontent20081224″); 4. “black fur” by fredrik, from na na ni: this is essentially a hymn, and a truly gorgeous and infectious one. the band is from sweden. i featured it on second stage earlier this year and institute myself returning to this specific song over and to the ground. var so = contemporary swfobject(”/player/media1/mediaplayer.swf”, “mediaplayer1″, “400″, “20″, “8″, “#ffffff”); so.addparam(”allowscriptaccess”, “samedomain”); so.addparam(”allowfullscreen”, “true”); so.addvariable(”callback”, “http://www.npr.org/player/media1/track.php?log=1″); so.addvariable(”file”, “http://pd.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/blog/2008/12/20081224_blog_blackfur.mp3″); so.write(”flashcontent20081224″); 5. “bye bye bye” by plants and animals, from parc avenue: this is simply an inconceivable, powerful and evocative song. plants and animals is a very deft group of musicians, and i take it it’ll do great things in the future. var so = rejuvenated swfobject(”/player/media1/mediaplayer.swf”, “mediaplayer1″, “400″, “20″, “8″, “#ffffff”); so.addparam(”allowscriptaccess …
