Unearth Confidently March On

find confidently demonstration on

Unearth drummer Derek Kerswill is a ball of excitement, and he has a right to be. Not only is he finally a full-fledged member of the Winthrop, Mass. metalcore quintet after spending time in the past as an occasional collaborator and fill-in for previous skinsman Mike Justian, but he’s just applied his trade to the band’s fourth album, The March. Oozing energy, one almost fears he’ll begin to froth at the mouth when he speaks.”These are fresh times for Unearth. It’s almost a renewal. Phase III or version 3.0 of Unearth,” Kerswill says. “There’s this synergy from the record being done and everyone being happy that’s bled over into the live shows. It just feels like such a full unit now, where you can see and hear separation in a lot of other bands.”Kerswill says his enthusiasm was a prime factor in establishing that unity, and was itself stoked by the opportunity to work closely on the album with main writer/guitarist Buz McGrath (the band are completed by vocalist Trevor Phipps, guitarist Ken Susi and bassist John Maggard).

The theme behind this 11-track opus is frustration at the cause of modern day woes. Not content to simply dole out the upset, though, Kerswill stresses the band were adamant in trying to find optimistic solutions, a glimmer of hope in otherwise dark times.”The March is affected ? well, inspired by ? the shit that our generation has to go through because of everything the Baby Boomers fucked up.

“We’re dealing with the repercussions of their actions, but instead of just griping about what’s going on, we really wanted to inject something positive into the mix. We’re looking at the evils of what’s been left for us, but we’ve put in some hope at the same time.”But Kerswill notes that despite reinvigorating Unearth, he doesn’t believe his heavy hand in the creation of The March has changed the band all that much. Conversely, he humbly recognizes how the only internal struggle now is coming up with a set list everyone can appreciate.”Unearth is an extremely integral underground band, but we wanted this to be more refined, focused, melodic and heartfelt. The March isn’t a drastic shift from the last three albums musically, but there’s definitely a boost overall.

Jim rome is burning

“We can tell because now that it’s done, we just have to get out and preach the word, but we’re struggling with what to cut out of a set list. We only play four songs from the last record because that’s all we wanted to do, and we’ve even cut one of those. We feel good about playing 75 per cent of this new album, though. That’s a really good sign.”

Sen. Ted Stevens convicted

by Frank James

Sen. Ted Stevens, the Alaska Republican, needed an acquittal in his federal trial to keep alive his chances of hanging on to his Senate seat. He didn’t get it. He was convicted today by a jury here in Washington of failing to report gifts on his federal disclosure forms.

Steven’s race with Mark Begich, Anchorage, Alaska’s mayor, has been a dead heat according to the polls. But now it’s hard to see how Begich doesn’t win after this conviction.

Stevens doesn’t have to exit the race since you can be a convicted felon and still serve in Congress. But if he were to somehow win, it’s hard to see how the Republican caucus wouldn’t force him quit.

Here’s part of the Associated Press’s story:

By MATT APUZZO and JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was convicted of seven corruption charges Monday in a trial that tainted the 40-year Senate career of Alaska’s political patriarch.

The verdict, coming barely a week before Election Day, added further uncertainty to a closely watched Senate race. Democrats hope to seize the once reliably Republican seat as part of their bid for a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.

Stevens, 84, was convicted of all the charges he faced of lying about free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor. Jurors began deliberating last week.

The senator showed no emotion as the jury foreman said “guilty” seven times. After the verdicts, Stevens sat in his chair and stared at the ceiling as attorney Brendan Sullivan put his arm around him.

Stevens faces up to five years in prison on each count when he is sentenced, but under federal guidelines he is likely to receive much less prison time, if any. The judge originally scheduled sentencing for Jan. 26 but then changed his mind and did not immediately set a date.

The monthlong trial revealed that employees for VECO Corp., an oil services company, transformed Stevens’ modest mountain cabin into a modern, two-story home with wraparound porches, a sauna and a wine cellar.

The Senate’s longest-serving Republican, Stevens said he had no idea he was getting freebies. He said he paid $160,000 for the project and believed that covered everything.

He had asked for an unusually speedy trial, hoping he’d be exonerated in time to return to Alaska and win re-election. He kept his campaign going and gave no indication that he had a contingency plan in case of conviction.

Despite being a convicted felon, he is not required to drop out of the race or resign from the Senate. If he wins re-election, he can continue to hold his seat because there is no rule barring felons from serving in Congress. The Senate could vote to expel him on a two-thirds vote.

“Put this down: That will never happen — ever, OK?” Stevens said in the weeks leading up to his trial. “I am not stepping down. I’m going to run through, and I’m going to win this election.” …

Iowahawk: I Am Bill

Iowahawk serves up another slice of righteous populist polemic, from a somewhat different angle: I AM BILL.

Every time I turn on the internet these days, it seems like another right wing blogger is digging up more baloney on Professor Bill Ayers. Apparently these people would rather talk about Bill Ayers’ passionate youthful rambunctiousness than the issues that really matter to us, like Sarah Palin’s shoe bill. Well, I’ve got a message for you, Mister Google cache McCarthy fascist: I’m mad as H-E-double sippy straws, and I’m not going to take it any more. No longer will not remain silent while you smear and slur this great America-hating American with his own quotes. Hear me now: when you mess with Bill Ayers, you’re messing with me.

Because I AM BILL.

I AM BILL. I am the everyday forgotten little guy in your neighborhood, the quiet anarcho-syndicalist family man who gets up early and punches the clock at the local state university, writing the manifestos and polemics and grant proposals that keep America humming. I’m just doing my job, and all I ask in return is a little respect. And tenure. And Chicago Citizen of the Year awards. And two graduate assistants to grade exams for Practicum in Imperialist Racist Hegemony 311, because I’m teaching two sections this semester. Also, a sabbatical to Italy next summer would be nice.

I AM BILL. I grew up in a simple little gated community just like yours, with white picket fences and where all the aux pairs and gardeners know your name. When my dad came home from a hard day’s work as a CEO, he was never too tired to help me with my homework or tousle my hair for winning the Lake Forest Academy essay contest on Hegelian Dialectics. Yes, he was a simpleminded bourgeois technocrat of the capitalist war machine, but he made sure I got the tuition and tutors and sailing lessons and allowance I needed to make it on my own. I wish he was still alive so I could tell him how much I really planned to kill him last.

I AM BILL. I work with my hands, grizzled and calloused from years viagra kaufen ohne rezept on a non-ergonomic keyboard. Maybe I don’t know pipe wrenches, but I know pipe bombs, and I’ve built them right there in my communal kitchen and I’ve watched with pride as they’ve offed a couple of pigs. Sure, maybe I’ve made a few mistakes with wiring or detonator timing and it ends up killing a couple of comrades. But you know what? I get up, dust myself off, and get right back to the drawing board. Because when it comes to international Maoist revolution, quitters never win and winners never quit.

I AM BILL. I love traveling the highways and byways of this great, puke-inducing country we call America, visiting its police stations and ROTC buildings and legislative halls. And when the pigs finally catch up with me and dad hires a legal team to get me off on a technicality, it lets me know that yes, Bill, you can go home again.

And there’s more…
