N.Korea ousts U.N. monitors, to restart atom bomb plant (Reuters)

VIENNA (Reuters) - North Korea has expelled U.N. monitors from its plutonium-making nuclear plant and plans to start reactivating it next week, rowing back from a 2007 deal to scrap its atomic bomb program, officials said on Wednesday.

The reclusive Stalinist state said on Friday it was working to restart the Yongbyon atomic complex it had been dismantling since last November under a disarmament levitra online-for-aid agreement with five powers that has derailed in disputes over implementation.

Olli Heinonen, the International Atomic Energy Agency's head of non-proliferation safeguards, told an IAEA board of governors meeting that monitors verifying North Korea's denuclearization were forced to leave the plutonium plant this week.

"There are no more seals and surveillance equipment in place at the (plutonium) reprocessing facility," IAEA spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said, referring to the most proliferation-sensitive installation at Yongbyon.

"(North Korea) further stated that from here on, IAEA inspectors will have no further access to the reprocessing plant," she said, summarizing Heinonen's remarks.

"(North Korea) also informed IAEA inspectors that they plan to introduce nuclear material to the reprocessing plant in one week's time," Fleming said outside the Vienna meeting.

Nuclear analysts have said North Korea would need several months at least to bring the installation back on line since it had been largely taken apart over the past year.

Confronted with the apparent unraveling of a rare foreign policy achievement by the Bush administration, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said North Korea's actions had "by no means" killed off the country's nuclear disarmament.

"Everyone knows what the path ahead is … an agreement on a verification protocol so that we can continue along the path of the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," she told reporters outside the

Broadway Co-Star: Holmes Wasn’t Bothered by Scientology Protestors

Mspca

Katie Holmes wasn’t bothered by the anti-Scientology protestors who picketed her first night of previews for Broadway’s All My Sons.

“It was much more disruptive to the other theatres on the street!” John Lithgow told reporters Monday at the Metropolitan Opera’s 125th season opening in NYC.

The critics have yet to weigh in on Holmes’ performance, but Lithgow can’t stop raving.

“Katie is lovely in the play, and she’s been such a sweetheart to work with,” he said. “She has worked so hard - this is a tough, tough play.”

He added, “Katie is acting with thoroughbreds and she’s doing a wonderful job! She’s had to really push herself.”

He said her husband Tom Cruise and Suri, 2, have visited her several times.

“They’ve been around … a lot!” added Lithgow, who said Holmes and co-star Patrick Wilson even set up an extra dressing room “as almost a childcare center. It’s very sweet!”

See photos of Suri through the years.

He said the Cruise clan is “just adorable! They are just lovely people.”

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Holmes’ appearance in the play helped pull in a hefty $478,235 for five performances and played to houses that averaged almost 98 percent capacity.

See how Katie Holmes has changed her look over the years.

This makes Sons in the race for the fall’s top-grossing straight play (Daniel Radcliffe’s Equus currently holds the title).

The necessary elements of a free-market free-for-all

note the emerging story approach — that the effects suds and the subsequent banking critical time at its popping was the result of a “free-retail charitable-inasmuch as-all,” as democrat league hack lanny davis put it in the wall high road journal today. or, as the one uttered in green bay, “they” wanted the market to run let off, but “they let it run wild.”

Yeah, cute. You, too, can get similar results from Blovia8 2.0, now available for both Windows and Mac. Whatever. The meme that Democrats and their camp followers are trying to cultivate is that this is what happens when you let markets work: Horrible things.

Because, as we know, markets were working, unhindered, over the past 10 or 20 years, yes?

Well, no. The Wall Street Journal editorialists helpfully sum up some of the leading elements of the supposed “free-market free-for-all” that weren’t exactly free-market. Remember, this isn’t new, just a roundup of history we all should know. Highlights:

Cheap money: “The original sin of this crisis was easy money,” writes the Journal, and that originates in the Federal Reserve, manufacturer of dollars. It “held interest rates below the level of expected inflation, thus creating a vast subsidy for debt that both households and financial firms exploited.”

Fannie and Freddie: You know that part about privatized profit and socialized risk? The second element doesn’t happen without politics. The government-sponsored enterprises “channeled far more liquidity into the market than would have been the case otherwise,” and “they dived into pools of subprime and Alt-A (liar’) loans to meet Congressional demand to finance affordable’ housing.” They remain the darlings and funders of congressional patrons, including an Illinois senator in office for only three years.

In fact, want to know why Fannie and Freddie weren’t sensibly kept on a leash? Kevin Hassett recounts the history at Bloomberg: The reforms stalled in 2005 in the Senate because specific senators wanted it stalled.

Credit raters: This, the Journal notes, is an oligopoly maintained by federal regulation. “The major government-anointed credit raters — S&P, Moody’s and Fitch — were as asleep on mortgages as they were on Enron. Senator Richard Shelby (R., Ala.) tried to weaken this government-created oligopoly, but his reforms didn’t begin to take effect until 2007, too late to stop the mania.”

Bank regulators: “The fable,” the Journal writes, is that a lack of regulation let all this happen. Only it was highly regulated banks that made bad bets, and they were allowed to do more of it under a regulator known for strictness. “Meanwhile, the least regulated firms — hedge funds and private-equity companies — have had the fewest problems, or have folded up their mistakes with the least amount of trauma. All of this reaffirms the historical truth that regulators almost always discover financial excesses only after the fact.”

The earlier bailout: The Fed and the Treasury intervened to unwind Bear Stearns, an intervention, the Journal contends, that signaled to other banks that bad debt wasn’t so big a problem.

Mega man 9

Bad borrowers: Why would anyone lend to someone unlikely to pay back? Because, the Journal notes, the Community Reinvestment Act “compels banks to make loans to poor borrowers who often cannot repay them. Banks that failed to make enough of these loans were often held hostage by activists when they next sought some regulatory approval.”

“Our point here isn’t to absolve Wall Street or pretend there weren’t private excesses,” the Journal writes.

But to label this a “free-market free-for-all” is to ignore the massive federal interventions in the markets — in malign, politically motivated ways that made this crisis what it is. It is an utter usurpation of language and history.

Mexico plans anti-kidnap police

The Mexican government has created a specialist police force to tackle the level of kidnapping in the country, among the highest in the world.

The authorities say so far this year more than 650 people have been levitra kaufen abducted in Mexico a huge rise on last year.

Mexico’s National Security Council says all 32 states will get an extra 11.5m pesos ($1.1m; ?580,000) in funding to set up the anti-kidnapping units.

The move was proposed at a security summit last month.

American apparel ceo

They were responding to mass protests - triggered by the abduction and murder of a 14-year-old boy - which brought 100,000 people on to the streets of the capital last month calling for tougher punishment for serious crime.

Corruption allegations

Violence has escalated in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon came to power in December 2006, despite his deployment of more than 40,000 soldiers to try to curb the power of the drug cartels.

This year alone there have been 3,000 drug-related murders, but kidnappings often receive less media coverage.

Although officials say there have been more than 600 abductions this year, human rights groups point out that up to two thirds of all kidnappings may actually go unreported.

They also accuse corrupt police officers of involvement viagra in the practice.

Among other measures the security council is considering is the creation of high-security prisons for kidnappers, and standardising anti-abduction laws across Mexico.

Mexicans will be hoping that the tougher line on kidnapping, and a related commitment to purge corrupt police officers, will create the safer society their president promised when he was elected.

Rejected O.J. juror: ‘He got away with murder’

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) — Potential jurors in O.J. Simpson’s robbery and kidnapping trial were under the microscope Tuesday as jury selection continued, with at least one saying she believed that the former professional football player was guilty of murder, despite his acquittal in a 1995 trial.

O.J. Simpson is accused of a dozen counts, including robbery and kidnapping, and could face a life sentence.

Judge Jackie Glass dismissed a prospective juror who after said O.J. Simpson “got way with murder.”

"I felt he got away with murder," the woman told Judge Jackie Glass, saying she doubted she could keep her personal feelings out of the case. "I think acheter cialis he was guilty the first time."

The woman was dismissed.

In all, 40 prospective jurors are needed to pass the "voir dire," or questioning, process before challenges from lawyers on each side reduce their numbers to 12 jurors and six alternates. As of Tuesday evening, 12 had done so: 10 women and two men. One of the women is African-American.

The high-profile case started with 500 prospective jurors. Based on their answers to questionnaires, 252 were rejected, leaving 248 in the jury pool. On Monday, Glass called in 86 and excused 14, most of them for medical reasons.

Privileged tv series

The judge has said her goal is to start testimony next week.

Simpson was found not guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman after a highly publicized trial in the mid-1990s. The specter of that case was continually raised during juror questioning Tuesday.

"I had a roommate who paid attention to the car chase, the glove, [prosecutor] Marcia [Clark]’s hairdo," one woman said, prompting chuckles.

Don’t Miss

Defense attorneys, however, are attempting to keep the focus on the current case, which comes nearly a year after Simpson and five other men are said to have stormed into a Las Vegas hotel room to recover sports memorabilia that Simpson said belonged to him. Prosecutors say that at least two men with Simpson had guns as they robbed a pair sports memorabilia dealers.

If convicted on all counts, Simpson faces a sentence of up to life in prison. He has pleaded not guilty and has told CNN he was trying to get his property back.

The incident occurred September 13 at the Palace Station Hotel, just off the Las Vegas Strip. Two sports memorabilia dealers — Bruce Fromong and Alfred Beardsley — were in
