Too bad you lost your house. Here’s some money to help the next guy.

This won’t help the people losing their homes, but it might help other people buy them.

Abc family 25 days of christmas

The Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles is proposing purchasing foreclosed houses in Boyle Heights and then selling them to first-time buyers. The new buyers could receive a $75,000 second mortgage from the CRA to help them get into the home, which they wouldn’t have to pay back for 45 years (or presumably when they sell the house).

This is a classic way of helping people get into homes they couldn’t otherwise afford. But wait! Isn’t that what got us into trouble in the first place?

Studying ‘The Sopranos’

DarrenthompsonOK, there’s been time to let the dust settle, to let our unconscious minds work out the details of a question much more important than how best to use the government bailout money or whether to help the big three automakers stay afloat. That question is: Did or didn’t Tony die at the end of “The Sopranos”?

Hawaii weather forecast

Dana Polan is on the case in his forthcoming study, “The Sopranos” from Duke University Press ? and the advantage of working in a books department is getting an advance peek. Here’s part of what Polan, professor of Cinema Studies at NYU, thinks about that HBO ending, starting with some theories he has heard:

“Might the fact that the shifty guy who goes to the bathroom is listed in the credits as ‘Man in Members Only jacket’ be a clue to his role as an angel of death, since the first episode of the season was titled ‘Members Only’ and, therefore, could have made this guy part of the mob? Does an obscure figure in one booth look like Davie, a gambler from a much earlier season who had been ruined by Tony and who might now be coming back for revenge? Might not the two black guys be the same ones who had tried to kill Tony in a previous season, now back to finish the job?…”

And then, his own perspective:

“There could be no satisfaction in any ending to the fictional story. Instead of choosing, then, a narrative ending, ironic or not, the creators behind ‘The Sopranos’ opted, instead, for a greater irony: admitting that the show was just a constructed bit of entertainment and not giving in to the audience’s desire to imagine that its fictions could have a real-life closure to them.”

OK, so I thought I’d actually get a different explanation. But if our own Martin Miller didn’t get anywhere with David Chase earlier this month, then what could I possibly expect? Polan’s book, however, does seem worth a look: coming to bookstores early next year.

Oh fiery colors, how short your stay, Merrily tantalizing my sense of sight. Against the blue sky, as if to blaze the way, Towards the promise of a new day, bright.

It is in autumn that I reflect the most, The end of the year spinning my mind around. Like the trees that wait again to host, My thoughts pause to absorb the sound.

Through the standstill, I look forward and back, Considering past, dreams turn to a future of hope. I wonder: Are the trees hopeful while they lack? Or have they just found a way to cope?

My mind it is filled with worry and doubt. Though my heart, a hopeful tree, dreams about.

Practicing Sharia Law in the west (minus the UK) should be considered a felony on the basis that it breaches a woman’s human rights…..

SOME Muslim religious leaders are condoning rape within marriage, domestic violence, polygamy, welfare fraud and the exploitation of women, a report on imam training has found.

The report, by the Islamic Women’s Welfare Council of Victoria, says some imams perform polygamous marriages knowing that the second wife, a de facto under Australian law, can claim Centrelink payments.

It found that some apply sharia when it benefits men but not when it benefits women, and that they hinder police from pursuing domestic violence charges.

The report, which has been rejected by the Victorian Board of Imams, also found that women seeking divorces had been told by imams that they must leave “with only the achat viagra clothes on their back” and not seek support or a share of property because they can get welfare payments.

Scientists find long-lost Furby look-alike

(CNN) — Scientists have found a wide-eyed primate — a clawed fur ball that fits snugly in one hand — in the first live sighting in more than 80 years of a creature that some thought was extinct.

Welcome back kotter

"It was truly amazing," one scientist said. "I couldn't conceive that we had actually caught one."

“It was truly amazing,” one scientist said. “I couldn’t conceive that we had actually caught one.”

Over a two-month period, scientists working in Lore Lindu National Park on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi caught and released three pygmy tarsiers. They bear a striking resemblance to the Furby, an electronic toy that spoke its own fantasy language and dominated children’s wish lists in the late 1990s.

They caught two males and one female, said Sharon Gursky-Doyen, a Texas A&M University anthropology professor who led the expedition. The group spotted a fourth — high in the tree canopy — but were unable to catch it.

The species had not been observed alive in more than eight decades, since they were collected for a museum in 1921. Many scientists had believed them to be extinct until eight years ago, when two scientists trapping rats in Sulawesi accidentally trapped and killed one.

"I needed to go myself … to confirm in my own mind," whether they were there, Gursky-Doyen told CNN on Wednesday, after recently returning from Indonesia.

And, on the second night of trapping in August on moss-covered, chilly Mt. Rore Katimbo, her group caught the first small nocturnal creature in a mist net.

"It was truly amazing," she said. "My whole body was shaking … I couldn’t conceive that we had actually caught one."

The second trapping didn’t come until three weeks later, but that first sighting "kept us going," Gursky-Doyen said, amid the cold, drenched conditions.

The pygmy tarsier, or Tarsius pumilus, weighs about 50 grams (1.7 ounces), and has dense fur, large, protruding eyes. In addition to seeming as a living, breathing version of the Furby, it also appears as though it ought to have had appeared in the 1984 movie "Gremlins."

Unlike other primates, the pygmy tarsier — endemic to a specific area of Indonesia — has claws instead of nails on its fingers. It is half as big as the Philippines tarsier, which has similar features.

For their part, the pygmy tarsiers may have been more frightened than elated at being discovered.

"I was bit once, but I take responsibility for that," Gursky-Doyen said, explaining that the animal nipped her as she was trying to attach a radio collar — to track its movement — to its neck. The task isn’t an easy one, she said, because the animal can swivel its head around 180 degrees.

Despite another person helping to hold the animal still, he turned and bit her, she said. They have "pointy, triangular teeth," she said. It was "very painful."

But for the most part, they appeared very "passive," she said. Other tarsier species give alarm calls, but these didn’t, at least nothing that a human could hear, she said.

Gursky-Doyen said she would like her graduate student, Nanda Grow, also on the expedition, to return to the field site for her dissertation, to learn more about the number of animals and how altitude and other variables affect them.

"I do believe that the density of these animals is very low," she said, noting that many villages are located within Lore Lindu National Park. "That threatens them," she said.

S Africa’s ANC loses top official

The former head of communications for South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) has resigned from the party to join a breakaway movement.

Smuts Ngonyama was quoted as saying he was unhappy about a recent disrespect of authority in the ANC.

The ANC split follows a bitter power struggle between party leader Jacob Zuma and former President Thabo Mbeki.

The ANC forced Mr Mbeki to step down as president in September - a move which angered some of his allies.

The ANC issued a statement saying they welcomed Mr Ngonyama’s decision and wished him luck.

At a press conference on Thursday, Mr Ngonyama said he wanted to contribute to South Africa’s development, and thought he could best do so by joining the new Congress of the People.

“I now believe that the Congress of the People is a welcomed addition to our political landscape,” he said, according to the South African Press Association.

“We have the opportunity to ensure that the dream of non-racialism, non-sexism, and a united, prosperous South Africa remains within our reach.”

Observers expect a number of other senior ANC members to resign ahead of the launch of the breakaway party, scheduled for December.

The party’s registration has been delayed because the name it had initially chosen, the South African National Congress, was challenged by the ANC, while the second choice name - the South African Democratic Congress - had already been taken.

The ANC says it intends to oppose the group’s third choice, as the Congress of the People refers to an event when the Freedom Charter - a document considered the cornerstone to the way the ANC governs - was signed in 1955.

“If they register their name with the IEC [Independent Electoral Commission], that’s when the opposition will start,” ANC spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said.

The new party is led by former Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota and the former premier of Gauteng Province, Mbazima Shilowa.
