They came to the area knowing how to kick; they just had to learn how to kick a different shape.Indian Valley’s Max Shulte-Beckhausen and Claymont’s Rafael Augustinho are transforming soccer knowledge to a boost for their respective new schools — and hometowns.Shulte-Beckhausen is an exchange student from Germany, while Augustinho is attending Claymont on an exchange program from Brazil.“Soccer ability doesn’t always carry over to football, but in this case it does,” said Indian Valley coach Matt Lancaster.Shulte-Beckhausen is being hosted by Kevin and Amy Barton, while Augustinho stays with Scott and Connie Beckley in Uhrichsville.Shulte-Beckhausen handles punting and kicking chores for the Braves, while Augustinho has been strictly the placekicker for Claymont. The Indian Valley kicker is from Bonn, Germany. He has never played American football.“I really like it because there’s a lot of emotion,” said Shulte-Beckhausen, who was a goalie on his soccer team at home. “It’s a fun sport.“I wanted to come here for the experience and I like it here. The high school is very nice and my family and the people here are very open-minded.”Shulte-Beckhausen got his introduction to football before he unpacked his suitcase.“We picked him up from the airport and took him to the school,” Amy Barton said. “They said in the office that practice was about to end, so we went around and let him meet the coach.”He came to the second half of the last two-a-day practice and wowed the team by kicking 50-yarders. The coaches gave him a book on special teams that paid dividends.During the opener against Newcomerstown, Shulte-Beckhausen was lined up to punt and the snap sailed over his head to the goal line. He raced back, picked up the ball and boomed a punt that got the Braves out of trouble.“He came to the sideline and said ‘I read that in the book,’” Lancaster said.Agustinho came to Claymont from Birique, Brazil, and he struggles a little more with English.“I just tell him to go kick,” laughed Claymont coach Ed Henry.He is also a lifetime soccer player who is picking up football — and the language — on the fly.“When I first got here, people would say ‘How are you,’ and I would say ‘I’m 17,’” Agustinho said.“I like football. When I played soccer, we only had two or three coaches and here we have a lot of coaches.”The Claymont kicker admitted that his only prior exposure to football came through ESPN.“My dream, since I was young, was to come here,” he said when discussing his stay in the United States. “I had cousins come here and they liked it.“My friends, my new family, the school, the food … it’s all nice. I like it so much here.”Shulte-Beckhausen is on a semester program and will leave in January, while Agustinho will be a Claymont throughout the school year.“It’s been a great experience for us and I hope it has been for him,” said Scott Beckley, an assistant football coach at Claymont. “My kids love him to death and he’s really come a long way with his English.“He’s also a very good soccer player. In Brazil, kids don’t get on television, but his team was playing in a big tournament that was televised and he scored five goals and was the MVP.”Both kickers have found success on the football field.Shulte-Beckhausen has put a couple kickoffs into the end zone. He has a field goal and a PAT to his credit through two games.Agustinho had three PATs last week and four on the season.

(CNN) — John McCain needs what Kinky Friedman calls "a checkup from the neck up."

In choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate, he is not thinking "outside the box," as some have said. More like out of his mind.

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain’s age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment.

In choosing this featherweight, McCain passed over Tom Ridge, a decorated combat hero, a Cabinet secretary and the former two-term governor of the large, complex state of Pennsylvania. iReport.com: ‘McCain pick might be a gimmick’

He passed over Mitt Romney, who ran a big state, Massachusetts; a big company, Bain Capital; and a big event, the Olympics.

He passed over Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas senator who is knowledgeable about the military, good on television and — obviously — a woman.

He passed over Joe Lieberman, his best friend in the Senate and fellow Iraq Kool-Aid drinker.

He passed over former congressman, trade negotiator and budget director Rob Portman.

And he also passed over Mike Huckabee, the governor of Arkansas.

While writing the arcade book, I had a chance to check out The King of Fighters XII at SNK’s offices on the actual cabinet — they even opened it up so I could check out the TAITO Type X2 system board. Obviously, it was an earlier build, but the game looked (and played) great. Those who like SNK fighters should be very, very happy, and the 100 percent hand-drawn graphics are stunning. The game is slated to hit Japanese arcades later this year.

Who Gets the Convention Bounce?

Political conventions focus public attention on presidential politics like few other events. So itâs not surprising that these quadrennial confabs also can produce significant movement in public opinion. Political scientist Tom Holbrook provides a useful history of convention bounces in this blog post.

His research also suggests Obama may emerge with a larger bump. Thatâs because the candidate with the earlier convention usually gets a bigger bounce:

The earliest convention tends to get a bigger bump, and there is some evidence that going appreciably earlier exacerbates this effect. One reason for this is that the first convention is held by the out-party, whose candidate [is] generally less familiar to the general public. Another possible reason is that opinions are generally less well-formed early in the campaign and may be more easily shaped by the first convention. In the data presented above, the first convention bump was the larger than the second in seven election cycles, smaller in three (1988, 200[0], 2004), and essentially tied in one (1980).

So, will a bigger Obama bounce prove fatal to McCain? Not necessarily. Holbrook has this caveat.

It should be clear that the magnitude of the convention bump is not a great predictor of election outcomes. For instance, Goldwater got a huge bump and went on to a miserable defeat, Nixon got a huge bump and narrowly won in 1968, and Reagan got a very small bump and still won the 1984 election by a wide margin. My sense is that the size of the bump doesn’t matter so much as whether the candidate gets the bump he is expected to get.

Pedigree pet food sold in California recalled

State public health officials have recalled a type of Pedigree pet food because of possible salmonella contamination, the Associated Press reports.

The California Department of Public Health issued a statement Tuesday pulling certain bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites off of the market.

Mars Petcare US of Franklin, Tenn., which makes the pet food, said in a statement that a possibly contaminated component that should have been held back was accidentally shipped to a Pedigree facility in Tracy, Calif.

It was used in about 100 bags of the food, which were shipped to Albertsons supermarkets in Southern California and to Costco stores statewide. The lot codes for bags sold at Albertsons is 830BFCAT02. The bags sold at Costco have lot numbers of 831BFCAT02 and 830DFCAT02. Both have “best by” dates of July 2009.

Salmonella can cause serious or even fatal abdominal illness, with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, in both people and animals. Sometimes the averse affects don’t show up immediately, so if your pet ate some of the recalled food, a visit to the vet is recommended.
