DJ AM Released From Hospital

Less than a week after the plane crash that took the lives of four people and seriously injured DJ AM and Travis Barker, DJ AM has been released from the Doctors Hospital in Georgia and is returning to Los Angeles, according to his publicist.

“While he is deeply saddened by the events, he is thankful for all of the love and support he has been receiving from fans and friends worldwide,” the rep said. “We ask that you continue to respect his privacy as he rests and heals and mourns the loss of his friends.”

AM updated his Facebook status on Friday (September 26), sharing his first public message since the crash. “Adam Goldstein is the luckiest guy alive,” his status now reads.

While no official news has been released about Travis Barker, who was also injured in the crash, Jermaine Dupri commented to People.com about his condition, saying that Barker will be released from the hospital in “about two weeks.”

On Tuesday, Barker was reportedly trying to stay optimistic after multiple surgeries related to the crash, friend Bill Nosal told The Associated Press.

“If you make it out of a crash of that magnitude, somebody’s looking out for you,” said Nosal, who is also the spokesperson for Barker’s clothing company, Famous Stars and Straps. “He’s trying to stay upbeat.”

Nosal said that Chris Baker, Barker’s personal assistant who died in the Columbia, South Carolina, crash on Friday, “was like extended family.” Barker also lost his bodyguard, Charles Still, in the crash, although Nosal pointed out that the drummer didn’t always travel with security. The pilot and the co-pilot, Sarah Lemmon and James Bland, also died.

Lieutenant Josh Shumpert of the South Congaree, South Carolina, police department spoke to People.com about what he saw when he arrived at the scene. “[Barker and AM] told me that they slid down the wing on the right side of the plane,” he said. “They said they were on fire and that they tackled each other and put each other out.

“When I got there, they were on the side of the road,” he continued. “They were pacing and in shock. Travis was very shaken up.”

Federal investigators are looking into the possibility that a blown tire could have contributed to the crash. They’ve found evidence that one of the jet’s tires may have blown moments before takeoff at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Audio from the jet’s cockpit voice recorder indicates that the pilot and co-pilot informed air-traffic controllers they’d heard a tire burst and tried to abort the takeoff.

I’m not a financial expert, so please forgive my naiveté, but $700 billion is not going to be enough according to many experts. The bill alone for AIG will consume a significant amount of this figure and many American financial institutions are still stuck with trillions of dollars of volatile mortgages.

Mr. Bush will not tell the U.S. taxpayer that America is drowning in debt to countries such as China and others. He will not mention the trillion dollars wasted in Iraq. He will not mention how he had personally asked the King of Saudi Arabia not to withdraw Saudi investments from the United States and not to demand payment in Euros for Saudi oil.

It was a forum on foreign policy, but one of the five secretaries of state on stage chose to make political news. In answer to a student question about whether electing the first African American president would send a message to other countries, Colin Powell, President Bush’s first Secretary of State - and the first African American to hold the position - said it would be “electrifying.”

He added, “I haven’t decided who I’m going to vote for yet,” saying he wanted to study their platforms and hear the debates before making a decision.

Speaking at an event at the George Washington University alongside four other former Secretaries of State, Powell elaborated that Sen. McCain had been a close friend and colleague for 25 years, but that he did not want to vote for him solely on the basis of their friendship, just as he did not want to vote for Obama just because he was a fellow African American.

A four-star general who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff before he became the 65th Secretary of State, Powell’s endorsement is coveted by both parties. Although he remains a Republican, he has been critical of President Bush’s handling of Iraq, and has said he would not have agreed with the decision to go to war had he known the evidence against Saddam Hussein was exaggerated. He has also voiced opposition to the Bush administration’s treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

Lehman Brothers is officially in crisis mode. Officials from the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York are reportedly on the scene, and that means one thing: Find a buyer now! Lehman has begun talks with potential buyers, Bloomberg News reports, following the plunge in its stock price and comments from Moody’s Investors Service that the firm needs to find a “stronger financial partner.”So who might buy Lehman? The strong buy the weak, and the list of potential acquirers is not very long at the moment. J.P. Morgan Chase, of course, came to the rescue of Bear Stearns and is not likely to try that again. Both the Wall Street Journal and CNBC are reporting that Bank of America has had preliminary discussions about a possible deal. The giant bank could certainly afford Lehman, but it is a surprising suitor given that a) BofA is already engaged in the process of integrating another troubled financial firm, mortgage lender Countrywide Financial and b) Ken Lewis, the bank’s C.E.O., last talked about the investment banking business in the same way that people politely make reference to the fact that sewage has flooded their basement.

Who’s left? Big overseas banks primarily. At any other time, the market plight of Lehman would be a great opportunity for a foreign bank looking to become a major player in U.S. investment banking. In this time of uncertainty, no one seems likely to take the risk. HSBC has been seen as a possible suitor, but a top Asian executive of the bank recently sought to pour cold water on an approach. Likewise, Barclays of Britain could be a good combination, but Bob Diamond, the president of the Barclays investment-banking unit, tried to discourage such speculation earlier this summer. The big Japanese banks have huge cash war chests, but having been burned before on Wall Street, are more likely to use that for overseas acquisitions of commercial and regional banks. Still, a Japanese newspaper said last week that Nomura Holdings was interested in Lehman. And what about Blackstone Group? Founders Steve Schwarzman and Pete Peterson are Lehman alumni. Lehman’s investment-management business would greatly bolster Blackstone’s asset-management business and would accelerate its push to diversify beyond buyout funds. Blackstone would become in one stroke a full-fledged major Wall Street firm.Or Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.? If the firm is planning to go public anyway, and is already bidding for a majority stake in Lehman’s investment management business, why not go whole hog?

“We have a lot of ethnic festivals on the riverfront, but this is the only indoor ethnic festival, and it gives the opportunity for a lot of smaller nationalities to come in here - (the groups that) can’t stage the big events,” said Civic Center Authority Chairman Peter Couri. “It’s like a Taste of Peoria - very, very authentic food. It’s just delicious.”

Couri raves about the Filipino offerings, which include empanadas, pancit palabok and pancit bihon - noodle dishes that are full of flavor, he said.

There also will be raffles throughout the day, and groups from the Peoria Origami Society to Friends of Clonmel to Bradley University and Illinois Central College will have booths.

Right around the corner in exhibit halls A and B will be the Central Illinois Black Expo, which features more than 125 exhibitors, a health/wellness fair and free haircuts for children. There also will be a teen summit sponsored by Bradley University and a Career Corner. Workshops include everything from “How to Improve Your Business’s Bottom Line” to “Web Site Development” and “How to Improve Your Credit Score.” The Black Expo is free and runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“I think it’s an excellent opportunity to come out to experience the diversity that’s within our community,” Bryson said. “These groups are predominantly from the Peoria area. They all have their own associations, but this is the one time that all of them are together in one place, so that makes it unique.”
