The Gr’iyad’h
???? ?? ????? ???…
Like the W’ural’d before it — a romantic immersive and fantastic virtual world (a term coined by Khamon Fate), the Gri’yad’h is a special, magical place made by the Lindens where the Better World will arrive at last, and all performance will be optimal, everyone will be on a level playing field, all the children will be above average, and learning and collaborating wonderfully in the Bright Future.

The Gri’yad’h — this is the term Khamon and I cooked up the other night — I guess it is to be pronounced with a certain Southern drawl — has an element of, well, struggle and force in it like that other famous word. People may not submit to it lightly, and it may not be so easy to lay the track. Where are we going…and why am I in this hand-basket?
While Eric Reuters somehow inferred some kind of modesty to the Lindens in his interesting interview with Joe Miller/Joe Linden, that LL would be content to have SL be one of many grids of virtual worlds, in fact, the Gr’iyad’h — as we have come to find out at various office hours, conferences, expos and such — is a pretty big concept. I mean, you don’t talk casually about being the Verisign of VWs and doing top-level control of things like .net and .com (.vw anyone?) unless you have real Mater of the Metaverse sort of aspirations. (BTW, Joe Miller is not Zero Linden, unless he’s now some sort of groupatar reflecting Lindeny Hive Mind — Zero Linden is Marc Lentczner, who runs the Architectural Working Group. Joe Miller is VP of Platform).
Don’t forgot Philip’s big idea, communicated last year at SLCC and subsequent conferences with the new burnished LL mandate: “It’s our mission to connect us all to an online world that advances the human condition.”

“An” online world…and when you read about Second Life Grid, as I’ve noted before, they mean anybody connecting to their servers and using their software. Naturally, other platforms who might make this hook-up could conceive of it quite differently; obviously on the Internet, the connections belong to the overall, overarching concept of “the Internet,” and not to this or that domain or set of servers. That would be absurd right?
Well, what is this Gr’iyad’h?
The Hopelessness of Interoperability by Nikolai Sapunov
It’s mystical enough when you read the official propaganda — let me tell you, it only gets more mystical as you talk to various Lindens, who look off into the far distance, their faces an inanimate, frozen mask of wonder and awe, as they grope for words…
Right now, the propagandists are working overtime on the MOTD (message of the day on the log-on) and various other subtle implantations and cues to let you know that Second Life is not for socializing, crappy inworld small business, grubby land-dealing and tawdry slutwear sewing, but for Your Organization or Business to have Training and Meetings. Oh, And For Education. This is being so flogged to death, and so hastily, that they forgot to take down the old pictures of the busty babes and shoppers and bicepy men on the front page, they are still hawking this “training/business/education” thing as if those people will go to those trainings dressed like *that* lol. Oh, and maybe they will…the charms of Second Life.

What’s clear is that our stage is being wound down — we, the misfits, the socially ill-adapted who tend to be early adapters. Mitch Kapor made that clear in his end-noter. He actually told an interesting anecdote about how he stopped old elitist coders in the MIT days who sneered at AOLers coming on the Internet and said they were essentially the cyber equivalent of racists, judging people by their domains. When Mitch talks like that, I have a glimpse of how SL could take a real better turn toward a better world…Yet…he unwittingly goes on to do the same thing all over again, calling us “misfits”.
Oh, I suppose it’s quite possible that the Lindens will leave this “legacy” forest of the W’ural’d “as is,” and it may even keep selling. They obviously found the optimal product in the humper bunker, and if they can just stabilize a bit and figure out how to deal with copyright theft by political or social means if they won’t do it by engineering means (i.e. their
