The Republican presidential nominee says all options must be considered to stave off insolvency for the government insurance and retirement program, and top McCain advisers say that includes so-called personal retirement accounts like those President Bush pushed in 2005 but abandoned in the face of congressional opposition.

The aides tried to soothe voters concerned about the bankruptcies, takeovers and bailouts on Wall Street by declaring McCain favored only the option of such accounts, just for younger workers, and most likely in a conservative investment vehicle such as bonds.

Private accounts for Social Security are “always an easier sell when the markets are going up instead of going down,” said David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor’s. “I don’t think this is a good week to sell that one politically, but you’re looking at the long term here. You’re investing your retirement funds for 20 or 30 years down the road.”

A headline Friday in the Manchester, N.H., Union Leader, the leading paper in that battleground state, underscored the political challenge. “Pension funds for workers take a hit,” read a story about a roughly $500 million decline the past three months in the state’

The Spice Girls have beaten Led Zeppelin to an award for the best music reunion of the last 12 months.

The girl group won best live return at the Vodafone Live Music Awards after getting back together for a world tour.

It was judged to have been better than the one-off comeback by rock legends Led Zeppelin, with The Verve and James also nominated.

Primal Scream picked up two of the top awards - for best live act and outstanding contribution to live music.

The show took place at Brixton Academy, with the rock venue lending it something of the atmosphere of a sweaty gig rather than a staid ceremony.

But the event did not just focus on rock bands, with pop acts like The Pussycat Dolls, Will Young and James Morrison performing alongside indie groups Glasvegas, The Automatic and Primal Scream.

Primal Scream are veterans of the live scene, having performed together for 25 years. They closed the show with three tunes, culminating in their 1994 indie classic Rocks.

They beat The Verve, Muse and the Kaiser Chiefs to the prize for best live act.

Accepting their second prize, bassist Mani said to the crowd: “What’s this one for again? Outstanding contribution, was it? That will do.”

The nominees were chosen by a panel of judges, with the winners decided by a public vote.

Emma Bunton was the only Spice Girl present, and said she was “a bit shocked” to beat such venerable rock acts as Led Zeppelin.

“We had a great time,” she said of the comeback tour. “So I just feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to do it again.”

The pop group’s victory will raise eyebrows among rock fans, but Bunton told the BBC News website: “The thing is, when you go to a gig, you go for fun and entertainment and a night out.

“And that’s exactly what we did and I think that’s why people enjoyed it so much.”

But she said she did not think the prize would encourage the fivesome to get back together again because they all had “other priorities”.

Mark Ronson was named best live male after taking his album Version on the road with a host of guest vocalists. He beat Dizzee Rascal, Morrissey and Paul Weller.

Kate Nash won best female, triumphing over Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Estelle.

Take That’s latest shows earned them the trophy for tour of the year, while The Ting Tings picked up best breakthrough act.

Glastonbury headliners Kings of Leon were named best international live act, with T in the Park winning best festival.

Other celebrities at the event included Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who was watching his girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger perform with The Pussycat Dolls.

Former Blur bassist-turned-cheesemaker Alex James was also at the event, but said: “I am getting it bit old for it all now. It’s not my music any more.”

Hospital classroom helps give kids a healthy education

At first glance, the room of teacher Patti Schumacher resembles your everyday classroom.

Textbooks line the shelves, boxes containing school supplies sit against the walls and small tables and chairs dot the floor space.

But take a peek into the hallway and you won’t see students opening lockers or walking on their way to class. Instead, you’ll see patients passing by on gurneys and nurses dressed in hospital scrubs carrying medical charts.

That’s because Schumacher’s room doesn’t sit on a leafy campus but inside the heart of the Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, just a stone’s throw away from the hospital’s pediatric floor. And her students don’t come from the surrounding neighborhoods but from various hospital floors. Serving as St. Francis’ schoolteacher, Schumacher, a teacher at District 150 for the past 34 years, brings the classroom to her students when they can’t head back to school.

Haley Carter from Bloomington is one of Schumacher’s students. Suffering from a form of bone cancer, Carter undergoes chemotherapy and physical therapy at the Children’s Hospital and is entering the fifth grade. Last year, because of her illness and treatments, she missed two-thirds of her fourth grade year at Grove Elementary School.

Her mother, Cathe Carter, said having the school just down the hall from Haley’s room is “wonderful.” Besides keeping her daughter up-to-date with schoolwork, the program can offer a welcome respite from the monotony of hospital life.

Haley Carter said she would rather be at Grove but concedes her time at the hospital’s school is well spent, too.

“I kind of like going to my regular school because all my friends are there and stuff,” the 10-year-old said. “But this is also nice, too.”

Convincing even the healthy students to do their homework can be an uphill battle. So when students are in pain, ill or stressed from the hospital, Schumacher said she takes that background noise into account when teaching.

“You have to keep the school in perspective,” she said, seated in her classroom. “We try to make adaptations as needed so as not to overwhelm them with the work.”

For example, one of Schumacher’s students, Kendrick Young, has sickle cell anemia, an inherited blood disorder that causes intense leg cramps. He takes medicine to numb his pain, but it also leaves him feeling woozy and tired.

“When I’m in the hospital, I’m in pain and I’m not really wanting to think about school or school work,” the 18-year-old Richwoods senior said. “Most of the days I just ride out the pain. There’s nothing else I can really do.”

Schumacher said for those situations, she’ll let the student set the pace, because stressing the pupil would only compound their problems.

During a normal work day, Schumacher meets with school-age patients, contacts their school to gather their homework and lesson plans and keeps the child on track as much as possible. Schumacher said she loves her work but admitted its challenges are a bit different from your normal classroom.

“There is absolutely no routine here,” she said of her nontraditional teaching job. “It’s almost impossible to plan your day.”

She and a group of volunteers have taught next to hospital beds while donning gloves, gowns and masks and to students in for routine tests or life-saving therapies. Often, the materials she takes to her students - calculators, rules, pens and laptops - have to be sterilized.

And in recent years, the job has become busier, too. Four years ago, teachers would usually serve about four to six students daily. Now, that number is roughly 10 to 15.

One reason for the increase is because teachers now help out at an eating disorder clinic in East Peoria. In fact, the program recently hired on a new part-time teacher to help in the afternoons.
