Thanksgiving on a budget takes skill
Getting ready for turkey day means early planning for those who cook big and spend big — and, for those who cook big and spend little.When Clinton Primary School ESL teacher Laura Gray prepares a Thanksgiving dinner, she has to start early and stick to a budget. Gray said she feeds about 25 people for around $200.“I start about two months ahead of time. I might buy my ham and my turkey and then the next month buy all get all my ingredients for any sweets I am going to cook,” Gray said.Gray said she has to budget for Thanksgiving because she only gets paid once per month. “So you have to budget it out when you don’t want everything to come out of one check. I have never been able to do that,” she said.As a single mother, Gray said she began to budget her expenses long ago. “Given our situation, we have to think ahead and I think I do not feel like I spend as much buying ahead,” she said.Gray said working from a budget allows more time to make wise spending decisions. “I know we are talking Thanksgiving, but I have to do that in my own everyday life. I never wait until Christmas to buy Christmas, and I never wait until birthdays to buy birthday gifts,” Gray said. Gray admits that she can cook a meal for a large family with about $200, but she does cut corners.“I probably could, but that means instead of buying Mr. Turkey I will have to buy two, three, or five little Mr. Chickens. When you make dishes like dressing, there are shortcuts. You learn them, ” Gray quipped.She said she did not always live on a budget, and that she has developed the skill that friends take advantage of. Gray said she sometimes will loan $20 to a friend who is a nurse, but lacks her discipline for sticking to a budget.“One of my best friends said ‘You are the richest broke person I know,’” she said. She prefers not to be stuck after the holidays catching up on bills. Another Clinton primary employee, Mona Jean Johnson, also prepares a Thanksgiving meal for a large family. Johnson said she has grandchildren from the ages of five months to 21 years of age.She also starts early and splits the costs with her sons and daughters. “I start early and buy by the big bunch, like a case of greens, a bushel of sweet potatoes and I buy big quantities and start early cooking,” Johnson said.She said together the family spends about $300-400. “I have a daughter and two daughters-in-law that help cook. I make about 15 sweet potato pies and she makes about five cakes, and she will do a pan of dressing and I will do a pan of dressing. We have about 20 Cornish hens that we cut in half and two turkeys,” Johnson said.Johnson said each of her four children probably spend between $75-100 each “With all my kids grown, I just dish it out,” she said. Johnson said they make it a two or three day feast. “I have all my children, my children’s families, some friends and co-workers, and just whoever wants to come by; they know they are welcome,” Johnson said.Others just cook a lot and fly by the minute, according to Hope resident Jeanette Bobo. “No, we just usually go with it,” Bobo said. She has been preparing Thanksgiving meals for about 30 years and cooks for about 30 people. She did admit to starting early, but not sticking to a special budget. “We just buy about the same thing every year and have the traditional Thanksgiving supper,” Bobo said.Clinton Primary second grade teacher Amy Tollison said she spends Thanksgiving in Pine Bluff with her parents. Tollison acheter levitra said her mother was a penny pincher when she was younger but has relaxed as her children got older.“During the holidays it is not as big of a deal because it is about family togetherness and not about how much she spent on it,” Tollison said.

Barack is ready to rumble, in the face of a White House that is AWOL. As the mind-deficient media has groused with impunity about inessentials, Barack has gathered a complement of solid choices faster than any President-elect in memory.
The notion that because people who know DC will surround him, he cannot bring change, is a cop out.
If you want to fix something, it helps to know how it works. Barack is about proving out an idea. Like Lincoln. The idea is unity. A coat of many colors. An iron belief in the rightness and truth of unity is the source Barack’s resolve.
Barack also has is an innate capacity for growth. A capacity that has put him on an unbroken 20 year track to … this moment.
Steely resolve, infinite curiosity. How to deal with things as President-elect with nearly two months to go before lift-off.
And a vacuum of mega-proportions.
Yesterday I published 194 things Barack would do on assuming office. The current crisis opens the door for a swift implementation of many of these objectives.

Asif Zardari: ?India & Pakistan Share Blood Ties’
President Asif Ali Zardari has become Pakistan’s first head of state to promise a “no-first nuclear-strike” against India. He talked of the need for change and reconciliation in India-Pakistan relationship, and the possibility of doing away with passports for travel between the two countries.
The surprise statement came when Zardari was addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit at New Delhi on Saturday via a satellite link from his official residence in Islamabad. Telecast live from India by CNN-IBN, the Zardari session was picked up simultaneously by Pakistani news channels.
“Zardari borrowed a quote from his late wife (Benazir Bhutto), who once said that there’s a ‘little bit of India in every Pakistani and a little bit of Pakistan’ in every Indian. He also talked about Indians’ and Pakistanis’ ’shared bloodlines’.
” ‘I do not know whether it is the Indian or the Pakistani in me that is talking to you today,’ Zardari said, amid applause from his high-profile audience, which included diplomats, politicians and industrialists.
“The President also talked of a common South Asian economic bloc with other countries. He suggested a ‘flexible Indo-Pak visa regime’, eliminating the travel documents now required and replacing them with a smart-card enabled e-visa system.” More here…
The deteriorating relationship with the US administration seems to be prompting Pakistani leaders to abandon the traditional 60-year-old bitter rivalry with India. India and Pakistan have a shared heritage going back to centuries. But that came to an abrupt end in 1947 with the end of the British colonial rule and a bloody partition.
“Polls show that the U.S. already faces ‘mounting popular opposition’ in Pakistan, which has not been significantly influenced by the election of a new civilian government in February,” wrote Jim Hoagland in July 2008 under the heading “India the Key to U.S.-Pakistan Relationship” in RealClearPolitics .
“Pakistani politicians, civil servants and military men have told me in recent months that open ‘collaboration’ with the United States is so ‘dangerous’ that they cannot afford to be seen working with the U.S.
“India’s growing economic power will leave its neighbor in the dust unless Pakistan becomes part of that prosperity. Pakistan’s future will be determined by its relations with India, not by increased U.S. aid or maintaining its support for tribal war in Afghanistan.” More here…

School Renamed for Obama
He hasn’t even been sworn in yet as president, but Barack Obama now has an elementary school named after him.

A New York elementary school has been re-named in honor of President-elect Barack Obama. Ludlum Elementary School in Long Island’s Hempstead Union Free School District was re-named at a board meeting Thursday, at the request of numerous school students.
“Just to watch these kids after the board voted on what they asked them to do, they were so elated,” school district superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria told ABC News. “You want to talk about “Yes we can!”? That was a lesson in democracy.”
Effective immediately, Ludlum will now be known as Barack Obama Elementary School, following a decision by the board to adopt the resolution drafted by students and staff.
Before this month’s election, the 5th grade class had a mock presidential debate at the school, which sits near Hofstra University, site of the third and final presidential debate between Obama and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
“The kids were really into it,” Laria said. “They had this fabulous debate…it was just outstanding.”
“The children received such a response from the community and the parents that they were so energized that they said that if Obama becomes president, we would be so proud to have our school named after him, especially because this is an African-American and Latino community that celebrates diversity,” said Laria.
Most of the school’s students are African-American or Latino, the superintendent stated.
So on Thursday night the kids came before the board to read essays describing what they had learned from the mock debate experience and appealing for the school to be re-named.
Their resolution read as follows:
“Whereas the Ludlum School students conducted a mock presidential debate related to the recent presidential elections and whereas the students did a wonderful job of carrying out their tasks and demonstrating their patriotism at an early age and whereas in recognition of their efforts and the victorious feat of Sen. Barack Obama in becoming the first African-American president of the United States, it be resolved that the Hempstead Board of Education proudly renames Ludlum Elementary School as the Barack Obama Elementary School.”
The board then adopted the resolution by a vote of 5-0, re-naming the school immediately.

Built in the 1920s, the Ludlum Elementary School was named after Dr. Charles Ludlum, a local physician who served on the school board for about 40 years.
Time will tell whether or not this was a wise choice or not.
