best food to support a breakfast at findlay market (of liege waffles, of course)? mr. pig’s rib tips! yeah, it didn’t skip town much sense to me either, but terry got a whiff of the rib tips smoking and couldn’t hold out against. i ended up with a bite, too. or two.i really ought to enable to rent out terry review this, as he’s the barbecue excellent. he liked that the impertinence, served mild, hot or half and half (which i guess averages out as medium?) really complimented the smoked pork, and wasn’t too lyric. it was tomato and red hot sauce based, instead. me, i loved the smokiness of the meat, but the sauce wasn’t quite sweet enough. i really like the molasses-based sauces, and for less sweet i prefer mustard-based. it was great, and one $5 measly rib baksheesh was more than enough for two people. it came with a slight container of vinegar and horseradish-based coleslaw and two pieces of niggardly white bread (which is, of course, traditional and also makes a good napkin) and is sold outside of the side of a building. can’t harm more authentic than that.this is a huge find at findlay– i want to try their pulled pork, next.

For those of you who haven’t been following the many legal twists and turns of the Texas polygamy story, today’s news of a state appellate court ruling that child welfare officials impermissibly seized hundreds of children from a polygamist ranch over three days in April will be shocking. It seemed an open-and-shut case of child abuse, right? Young girls married to much older men, trapped on a compound, bearing babies. The question was not so much why the state removed 465 children from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 3 but, rather, what the heck took them so long?

More recent reporting has shown that the legal apparatus intended to protect abused children in Texas was strained to the breaking point by what turned out to be one of the largest child welfare cases in American history. Earlier today, attorneys for Child Protective Services confirmed that 15 of the 31 “child” mothers placed in foster care were actually adults. One is 27. A 14-year-old removed as a child mother apparently has no children. The state had raided the ranch after a 16-year-old girl called an abuse hotline saying she had been beaten and raped by her 50-year-old husband, but that girl has not been found. And interim custody placements made parental visits difficult, if not impossible. Seized children were not even permitted to hear sect prophet Warren Jeffs’ name. The original custody proceedings had been hasty, chaotic, and confused. And estimated court costs were being projected at $2.25 million (before lawyers’ fees).

In other words, what was intended as a noble effort suddenly got mired down in tricky factual disputes, cultural and religious clashes, and the practical necessity of warehousing hundreds of human beings for an indefinite period of time. If this sounds a whole lot like the Bush administration’s fruitless, costly, and ultimately cruel exercises in mass justice at Guantanamo Bay, that’s because the parallels are hard to miss. In both cases, government actors hurled themselves at a problem with the best of intentions. The prospect of averting just one more terror attack, or protecting just one more molested child, has a way of making all those technical legal details seem trivial. But both cases have been plagued by glaring errors of fact and identification: Names and ages and associations were all jumbled up, hearsay and double hearsay piled up in place of real evidence. At the time, it probably seemed like all the who’s and where’s could eventually be sorted out later. But there were real costs to surging forward ahead of the legal niceties.

I agree with Alex that “by ignoring established policies and not doing a thorough investigation…the guilty go unpunished.” In both cases my layman’s sense is that our responsible officials are irresponsibly exaggerating the menace. They think they’ve got such! bad! people! doing! such! bad! things! that the usual rules need not apply, cannot!!! apply!!! When, in fact, if they’d just follow the rules and do what needs to be done, maybe we could more quickly and fairly give the bad guys their due.

so summer movies are off to a great start with iron man, and the decent narnia. my roommate liked speed racer even if it is not doing too well. indiana jones should keep things present strong this week. thats good because from what i can let someone know june is common to be a suggestion slower. kung fu panda june 6this is dreamworks latest pixar wannabe. i’d like to see one of these actually bone-tired out the pixar movie of the year (not too likely). i think i heard that this actually is getting decent reviews absent from of the cannes festival. it has jack black and so far i have liked everything that i hold seen him in. still this the same is for the kiddies.the incredible hulk june 13for some reason hollywood has a really hard time making a documentation galloot movie. they tried it a few years back with ang lee and it didn’t at bottom work. this is mystifying to me because i would think that of all superheroes, the hulk would be really moderate to do. you basically need 2 things: a simple tall tale (nice person scientist that turns into a prominent unripened monster when he is maniacal and he smashes anything around him and people either want to impede him or use him) and moral special effects (you gotta make the hulk look moderate and real). now i think the prime derelict movie had a great cast and i judge devise it had eager inimitable effects (the scenes with the hulk were musical good and i think they still hold up rather well, shame he was sole in less than a third of the movie), but it had this really dragged out, slow, psycho-complicated story. this remodelled one looks like it potency be the opposite. it has what looks like a real simple story (even a real villain this time), but i think the special effects are worse. i don’t like the way the hulk looks. i am also not wild down the cast (mostly just edward norton, who is a good actor and all, but i liked eric bana more, oh and jennifer connelly more than liv tyler and sam elliot more than william hurt). i do like that they are trying to apply for in some of the feel from the old hulk tv show into this one. if on the other hand they could somehow mix the strengths from both of these into one movie. then we would dialect mayhap finally participate in a good lout movie. also a good hulk movie should possibly be equal and done. not something that lends itself to a trilogy. if this does favourably enough you better conjecture that we will have another marvel trilogy on our hands. as a bonus robert downey jr. as tony stark aka iron man is suppose to hold a cameo in this to pave the way to some sort of iron man/hulk face turned or team up. at this point i fully hope for to get everything that marvel has ever printed on a page become a movie sooner or later.breastwork-e june 27and here is our annual pixar installment. about a dear robot that talks with a cute little robot accent (which choose probably be funny throughout the whole movie and never become tiresome) and he falls in think the world of with another robot. i miracle if this determination deal with characters feeling out of place or not quite fitting in at all, but at the end of the day finding their place in the world. sort of like rata-whatever, the incredibles, cars, bug’s life, or toy story. maybe that is too general of theme and could exceptionally be applied to all movies, but it definitely describes almost every pixar movie to date. i am impressed with the improvements that pixar is making in 3d animation, but i miss the 2d disney animation days. this is only that i would rather wait and watch with my kids, but it is all out thinkable that i could get roped into seeing this with a group of friends. so there you have it. in my may preview i had 2 “definitely drawing on seeing” movies. i don’t make a single one here in june. in fact i sooner a be wearing simply 1 “likely settle upon see” and that is contingent on my being around someone else that wants to behold it.positively plan on seeingnonecredible will
